FFF in Tasmania 5: Fishing 420m deep
Got an invite to go fishing about 50km south of almost the southern-most point of Tassie last week, on the Continental Shelf drop-off, in 420m.
It was easily the most unusual fishing trip I have done.
I had a go on a rod with an Alvey winch-style reel, not electric. It took about 25 minutes to pull in this little Ray's bream ...
Also caught were large gemfish and grenadier ... there would have been more but a six-foot mako took a lot of fish before becoming tangled in a line.
Fished shallow (120m) for a load of gurnard and cod.
It was an area not often visited by trailer boats, but there was a window in the weather that allowed us to travel way past the almost-famous Pedra rock.
Full story in a future NTMAG!

Re: Bottom fishing in 420m of water
I used to chase blue eye and hapuka. Out off Eden on the south coast. Anywhere from 400 to 700m deep. We used to use tyrnos 30s. But now all electric. Good fun but tiring. Weirdest catch was 2 gummy sharks from 600m.

Blue eye were the target, but if we hooked any they ended up as mako food.
Saw a few seals and big mobs of dolphins, many seabirds including giant albatross and mutton birds.
The day was rated as "flat" - the swells were only the size of steamrollers

Re: Bottom fishing in 420m of water
When i was on Christmas island it was about 500m not far out and the electric was the norm.
Some of the older guys got smart and used to troll for Wahoo with them as well. (Help getting them in quicker than the sharks)
Done a bit of jigging with some young fellas but after 5 or so drops at over 500m that was it for me. ( OK 3 really)

Yeah Matt, some big swells down that way. My mate used to be a cray fisho and 7m swells were just the daily workscene.

There's some weird fish down there alright ...
They all have big or unusual eyes so there must be some light down there, unless they come up at night to feed.

Looks like some of the creatures you see on Mitchell Street that come out at night to feed

Fun in the deep, good one Matt
Look forward to the story!
Look forward to the story!
If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!
Especially when you can see them!

Dunno, but I think it hit 20C on the surface, which is apparently high for there
