squid
When we sometimes go to anchor way offshore at various shoals, I always put a floodlight over the side and we get quite a few large squid come around usually. Similar to arrow squid down south, long skinny and a reddish colour, very fast in the light and its easier to jag em with a treble as they don't take a jig very often Occasionaly get a school of the short fat ones that appear white in the light.

Fishing is not a matter of life and death, it is far more serious than that.

Used to get heaps of squid at Mandorah jetty under the lights years ago, sometimes upto 30-40 in a night. Yozuri jigs were ok in the smaller sizes but nothing beats an accurate cast with a draw-string throw net. Also learned to be very very good with the net by doing this as the alternative was either ripping nets to pieces on the pylons or going for a swim to retrieve them (was usually what I did even though is was freezing and we were fishing for and catching sharks at the same time on most nights, just shake my head at some of the things I used to do
). Neaper tides with no or minimal moon during the dry was the best time. Unfortunately me and my mates thought that using them all for live bait was a lot better than eating them, would be a little different these days, maybe 50-50 for live bait and my guts, kick myself now whenever I buy squid rings from a fish'n'chips shop and pay 80 cents each for a ring
.
