Current abundance of well-priced seafood on market

Consumers can take advantage of good savings on seafood following bountiful catches of fresh king and tiger prawns being made in Moreton Bay.

Fisheries Queensland general manager Jim Groves said current industry reports on catches were very positive.

“Some trawlers report catches of over double what they were catching at this time last year,” he said.

“At the moment there are good quantities of king prawns, tiger prawns, sand crabs, spanner crabs and Spanish mackerel being caught.

“Moreton Bay seafood is among the best-quality seafood in the world and now is the time for seafood lovers to take advantage of this top-shelf product right on their doorstep.”

Queensland Seafood Marketers Association secretary Martin Perkins said prices were very reasonable as a result of the larger catches.

“For those who like the small, sweet, cooked Bay prawns, catches have been extremely good with low prices,” Mr Perkins said.

“I encourage you to take advantage of the low prices and support your local fishermen and retailers by buying fresh produce straight from Moreton Bay.”

Mr Groves said Fisheries and aquaculture industries were severely impacted during the floods and cyclones and needed the community's support in rebuilding.

“The floods and cyclones resulted in a $25 million bill to cover gear and equipment losses, and impacts on fish habitat areas across the State,” he said.

“In order to help the businesses rebuild now is the time to be buying some fresh, local produce.

“Moreton Bay seafood is as high quality and as fresh as always.”
