Hi Deep Black,

Mate we have tried a heap of different things with these weedless lures some thing work and some things don't, it is very hard to judge unless you have fish on tap right there infront of you slamming lures every cast, We did spend a lot of time at flickin fresh barra farm before the terrible accident accured, where the fish are pretty consistent this gave us time to try a few things and to see what worked best, One thing I have been doing with the 4/0 W/L hook in Mustard is once you rig the lure push the plastic down to expose the hook point and just behind the barb use pliers open the hook up a little using a thumb on the eyelet and pretend to straighten the hook opening the gape just a little, so when you try to hide the hook point and barb it almost sits flat with the back bone, then the hook up rate improves big time, these mustard hooks are rated to 18kg where the VMC hooks are at a 24kg rating, so you shouldn't straighten to many hooks??? I have been talking with a guy from sunny coast area who mainly targets Barra and Jacks, He is cutting out the belly on both sides of the 4.5" weedless models so there is nothing stopping the lead pushing upwards on a strike, also giving full hook exposure where he said every hit was a fish, it almost feels wrong cutting a brand new plastic up with scissors but he said he has been still hitting at least 15-20 fish per lure that's not bad especially with a few toothy jacks in the mix,
But if you have time and wouldn't mind playing around with a few different hooks and lead set ups I would be more than keen to hear what you can come up with, With using ball sinkers, depending on the tide and where im casting will determine the size I use, But one night fishing the clear water in Port Douglas I picked up 3 barra tucked up tight on the outside of the stinger net I had a 3" weedless T/Bz with a size 00 ball sinker in my loop knot 6lb braid and 15lb fluro leader with my head torch on and 1st cast I saw the middle barra come out and give chase for about 1 mtr then the closest fish to me chased it for 3 to 4 mtrs this happened 4 casts in a row, Then I cut the ball sinker off retied the same lure and first cast the closest barra absolutely nailed that lure this 62cm barra in 2 ft of water put on some massive ariel jumps and smoked the 6lb 1000 reel, so just to witness what actually happens with your lure and the way the fish take to it on its retrieve give me plenty of food for thought, If you wanted to send me a PM we can talk further or if you wanted to give me a buzz direct would be good 0404731555

Cheers Gleno
