Nice short rifle, well balanced, great for off hand shooting.
Small enough to handle in the scrub, yet has the capability to reach out further if need be.
10 shot Capacity and spare magazines available.
chambered in .308, if you can shoot a bit, it's plenty enough gun for everything in the Territory.
Ammunition is reasonably well priced and available EVERYWHERE just about.

Big guns are for people who cant shoot straight
Some one on this site was selling a nice little 223 just recently and that's all you need for pigs
Little Remmy with a pistol grip and flash close quarters sight, perfect for up here and had a ten round capacity to

stumbled on to buffalo real close on 2 seperate occasions now. Neither time had to shoot them cause they ran the other way but felt a bit under gunned. I now shoot with a 375hh and love it. I havent shot a buff with it but i reckon it would be capable of getting a pill to a buffs heart / lungs through its arse.

Your just gun shy and flinch at any thing bigger than an air rifle .

Re: Piggin cannon
I'm looking into a rifle at the moment and a lot of blokes lean toward 308 but everyone's different some blokes are happier with smaller caliber and some swear that you'll need bigger for a buff. Think ill go with a ruger scout or a tikka or sako stainless as it may end up in the boat. Think I'd rather take a stainless on the boat but the ruger scout is shorter so more convenient. Hard decision

Re: Piggin cannon
I dont think you need to have a big calibre rifle to go after buff. a 30-30 will knock buff down no problems if ya put the pill in the correct spot. Problems arrise when ya workin at 4.30am in ya open sided workshop and you can hear the bugger just outside of the light. a 30-30 or 270 is not the rifle i would like to reach for. 308 is good, 300win is better, 338 i am liken it more and am half keen to go looking for the noisy bugger out there in the darkness. Each to there own but a 22 cal without a fox is homeless.

Re: Piggin cannon
30 cal just gives you security if you dont hit it in the sweet spot it still has enough power to flatten whatever ur shooting at. Personally i choose the 300win because it flies striaghter then the 308

But what range are you shooting? Love my 7600 .308 with 16" barrel, loud but effective, and you are right the hydrostatic shock of the .308 does a good job, depending on you projectile type and weight.

Re: Piggin cannon
More pigs have been shot in Australia with a .22 cal pill than any other I'd reckon (22/250, 223 ect). Problem is up here that you need enough gun in case you bump into an old angry buff too. I have a Marlin 30/30 with a red dot and love it, but it comes up a bit short on buff. That is were my 300WSM comes into its own, but then its a lot of gun for pigs, 180grn would punch straight through. 150 HP hand loads are the trick though.

Re: Piggin cannon
I doubt that with the .22 !! Most pro hunters use 223 243 calibre and I think the chopper eradication groups shoot with 308s I'm pretty sure and there shooting 5000 6000 couple times a year up the gulf and cape !!
Personally like the 308 and 3030 is a good boat quad gun !!

Re: Piggin cannon
.223 and .243 are both in the range of the 20 calibre guns buddy nad the aerial shooters use 30 calibre rifles for humane reaseons and cost effectivenes.
Most pro shooters if given a choice for Pigs and smaller game woulg choose something in the 20 cal range.
Just sayin !!!!
