Well while we are on the subject I'll throw in my 2 bobs worth,
Having spent 32 of 40 years on this planet, and taken nearly every game species bar a handful that Australia has to offer, for hunting in the NT I would honestly look no further nor less than the 308win for both performance , cost effective , availability , and a pleasure to shoot all day every day if required. Sure a .44mag is probably a tad more cost effective as the 30/30 but if the trophy of a life time happens to cross your path and let's be real here, this is what we have in the back of our mind every time we go out , you are under gunned!! Has happened to me and touch wood never again! Yeah a 44,223,30/30 etc etc are all good in there own right including a WELL placed shot , when the SH$T goes down, things arent always the perfect scenario these calibers fall way short of the mark . On the other end of the scale the 30/06 ,300 ,375 ,338 etc etc , are extremely effective they do fallshort in the cost ,availability and pleasure to shoot all day every day side of things . As has been mentioned by fellow FFFrs and myself included most kills for me have been between 5 to 100m and by the style of hunting you have described in your post it is a carbon copy of the way I like to hunt myself.Having said that , my preferred toy of choice to this date is the REM 7600 PATROL 308 , it's short ,light, quick and hell is it effective ,combined with a 10 shot clip ,myself I could not ask for any more.Boars,Bulls,Buff and all in-between have fallen to my trusty sidekick .
So there is my 2 bobs worth, hope it has helped you out, and if ya haven't had a crack at the 7600 pumpy , pm me and I'll take ya for a blast

good advice there But I wouldn't agree with the 30/06 being in the same category as 300 ,375 ,338 etc etc.. Not much dearer than .308 to feed and in a rifle with a decent recoil pad not bad to shoot a lot of rounds through my Mrs shoots my .30/06 and its defintely at the lighter end of the scale, but then she also shoots my .44 and .45/70 and she isn't a big woman. And also gives you the option of bullets upto 220gr which is handy for buff and real big boars I've found, or you can load light bullets for some pretty high velocity/accuracy if you hand load.
Oh and I cant believe I didn't think about it before but have you thought about a Ruger Gunsite Scout?? its a 10 shot .308 bolt action with removable mags, you can buy extra mags for it also, and its quite short and handy, for creeks and scrub

If you mob are interested in 30-06, I know where there is a poop tin of ammo (federal), going dirt cheap due to damaged packaging

Re: .44 magnum
Something else to consider in the Remington line of pump actions:
The 7600 in .308
or
The 7615 in .223
Having owned both, I can promise you that they are a brilliant gun for the NT.
I hunt 9/10 times with a .223 and with a FMJ, you can drop any pig you swing onto.
You can get 10rd mags for the 308 and up to 30 round mags for the 223.
All the major shops in town should stock them and prices arent that much dearer than down south.
Bear in mind that for the little bit extra, supporting you local with be beneficial should something go pear shaped.

Re: .44 magnum
bl..dy .308 ... the Holden Kingswood of calibres!
Here's some .44 mags in octagonal barrels ...
http://www.highlandsports.com.au/produc ... kv8UA6Bu8=
http://www.highlandsports.com.au/produc ... zBf/LeZo8=
The Henry is also available in .45 Colt, now there's something different for up-close pigging, and your ammo belt would easily recognisable
The trouble with being different, though, is in the resale ...
And what happened to all those Kingswoods, you never see them any more ...
