Re: Octopus hooks
I used to use the mustad big red 7/0 and absolutely swear by them. Stay sharp and never straightened one but at $1 each I also looked for a cheaper option. Now using the same hook pattern from Rig Master Tackle. They don't stay sharp over multiple trips but because of they cost bugger all I just change them out. Haven't straightened one yet and have stopped some big fish

What size line do you want to use tran did you end up getting onto some of that whiplashbalou wrote:I have been using gamakatsu 6/0 for the last decade without ever straightening a hook. My reels are usually set with heavy drag . It cost about 75c to $1 per hook and I usually recycle for a couple of trips .
Im chasing your thoughts on the el cheapo chineese brand hooks from ebay for bottom bashing. It's about 60 bucks for 500 hooks in 6/0 chemically sharpened.
Anyone using them or recommend another bulk option.
Cheers

Re: Octopus hooks
I used gamakatsu 8/0's but got a bit pricey to feed to the sharks. I tried the cheaper eBay ones $10-15 for 60, cheaper for 500. I never have a problem with them. If it hooks as an octopus circle hook should you shouldn't have a problem. If the point is taking all the force , it's going to bend. Hooked onto something big in bynoe a month or so ago. Managed to lift it a bit over 10-15 mins, guessing it's a big ass shark by this time, then it realised it was hooked or saw the boat and took off at warp speed and snapped the 40 or 50 lb braid. A lot bigger than I thought. I reckon more fish are lost from not having sharp hooks. I buy from this eBay store.

Might stick with my fins 20 lb and ebay hooks to give them jewies a fighting chance.AM wrote:What size line do you want to use tran did you end up getting onto some of that whiplashbalou wrote:I have been using gamakatsu 6/0 for the last decade without ever straightening a hook.
