Mate your so lucky to be able to fish from a chopper.
I've got no issue with the keeping of a big fish provided that it is eaten. Keeping a big fish to eat is far better then tossers who catch and release 10 barra just for sport. At least 1 in ten will die when released. I'd suggest (unsupported by evidence) that the death rate would be even higher for big fish due to the stress they go through in the big fight.
My two bob's anyway.

DNO62 I guess you only keep males to eat? You might have a rule that you only keep fish up to 80cm? Could that be right? How many of them are females. You kill, say a dozen 80cm fish/year and think necking 1 metre fish is a crime for future stocksDNO62 wrote:Nice work barraboss, nice work indeed, you have just killed tens of thousands of future barra that my grandchildren won't get the opportunity to catch.
Nice work mate.

G'day drifter,
You have a very good memory, yes I will not take barra over 80cm as at that stage they are all still males. However lets not start that debate again.
As for giving it to barraboss, well poop happens, opinions are just like assholes, everyone has one. After all he did fess up to having to toughen up.
It was a light hearted dig, however now that it is being discussed, what he did is not illegal, just immoral in the eyes of some.
Also just having another look at the chopper shot, I do hope that he wasn't fishing on his own.

Hey DNO62, just another slant on this age old argument with some specs from the NT Gov web-site
Barra change sex approx 85 - 90 cm (4 year old)
Barra at 80cm is about 3 year old
Barra at 100cm is about 8 year old
Barra at 100cm are only 60% chance of being female
Barra spawn 30 mil eggs a few times/year
Lets say an 8 year old Barra has laid 320 million eggs
Killing a male a year before sex change = NO EGGS
So what is worse?
Also, I could only see 5 Barra in the chopper photo - thats still legal isn't it?
This post isn't directed at you specifically DNO62, but those that bring out this rant every time a big fish is necked.
And I agree that opinions are like arseholes, but sometimes arseholes have opinions

I have no qualms with people keeping fish for a feed. I don't really care if they are over or under a meter either as long as they are utilised. Like I said earlier thet big fish would have tasted like a turd burger so the justification for keeping such a big fish is lower. We are all singing the praises of the NT government on closing the Finniss to commercial interests yet as is always the case the amatuer fishing faternity is knifing that progress for a photo oppurtunity. I have an 80cm limit on my boat too and although this isn't fool proof it is better than doing nothing.

Ill have to post more big fish i catch, this is fun.
I didnt eat the fish, some people at the homestead did, they said it tasted pretty dam good, personally a rubber thong would have tasted better but i didnt try it, ill stick to eating my silver bullet chrome barras.

yeah i dunno at first i was given a hard time on the hunting forrum and expected as much from the fishing forrum but then i realised i have never met any of the key board bashes that critize on this site and more than likely never will so who cares what they think of me or what they say of my fishing i dont often see any good fishing posts or photos on the forrum form them so ill just keep posting the fun times i have and look forward to seeing every one elses fun times photos.
Cant wait for the posts that will hopefully flood this site over the run off. Its going to be a good run off i can feel it.
