Mill Pond Billies
Went for a run out from the Dampier Archipelago Sunday morning, Been a month plus since I’d had the boat on the water & with the weather report looking good the plan was to head out wide for stab at a billfish.
Good was an understatement, the weather was perfect. It was the flattest cobalt blue water I’ve seen & resulted in a full day glass off. Fishing was fairly slow for the first few hours as we worked some contour lines in about 40-45 meters of water, with zero surface action to be seen and very little showing on the sounder we headed in a bit shallower. A bait school was located and on the first pass the Tyrnos 20 screamed, After a short tussle a small Black Marlin was tagged and released. This is my second B.M. under the meter mark & I feel I might be slightly over gunned on the 10kg gear, but the few leaps he made entertained the two newbie deck hands onboard.
We resumed working the area for an hour or so, trolling a mix of skippin’ gars and Pushers for zilch. Whales by the hundreds it seems are currently moving through the area, and it makes it hard to keep the deckies focused on the baits while humpbacks are breaching 100 meters from the boat
So the call was made to drift some livies. 30 minutes in and the Tyrnos screamed again. I handed the rod to one of the green horns, and after a 40 minute very “awkward”(pump & wind cant be that hard to understand??) battle an estimated 32kg Black was tagged and on its way, after a quick photo as it was the deckies first. Fishing went a bit quiet through the middle of the day so we headed back in trolling a few Mackie lures through the islands for zilch, to be back at the ramp by 5.
Some friendly locals....the water was unreal.

actually on another forum, some raised an estimated 100kg plus Black last week, it hit a 10kg mackerel he had caught on a pusher, tangled itself in the line and he fought it for 10 mins, a few jumps and then untangled. photos look great.

Re: Mill Pond Billies
Trolled up another smallish black on tuesday in some pretty ordinary conditions, worked the same contour marks as the original post.
Fish was taken on a 6" MBT tulip. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
