Fishing out of Bermagui in the early 90s it was a very big no no to kill marlin. These guys came up from Sydney and killed their first marlin and spent a real lot of money getting it mounted.
Those boys were shunned in a big way..

It was more than ok to kill the yellowfin tuna the bigger the better.

Why? Who is to say kill tuna but not marlin. From what I hear now it is easier to get a marlin than a yellowfin. (Pound for pound the marlin is no match for the tuna)

Sometimes the prevailing wisdoms just don"t add up.

Yep, because yellowfin tuna have been heavily fished which is sad. The slaughter of marlin till goes on today with longliners and in some comps that still weigh fish which is sadder :-(
