Manton Dam algal bloom

Post by Matt Flynn »

From NRETAS

Manton Dam

The Department of Natural Resources, Environment, The Arts and Sport (NRETAS) advise that water tests undertaken by Power and Water Corporation at Manton Dam, south of Darwin, are showing the presence of blue green algae (cyanobacteria).

Signs have been placed in the area by Power and Water Corporation advising visitors to Manton Dam Recreation Area to exercise due care and caution.

Northern Territory Government agencies are following the standard protocols for the management of the algal bloom.

Blue green algae (cyanobacteria) is the predominant species in the algal bloom, is not toxic and are within guideline values.

Power and Water and the Department of Health and Families (DHF) are monitoring the situation, and will advise further if the situation changes.

Power and Water Corporation has an ongoing program of water quality sampling and analysis at Manton Dam.

Power and Water has, and will continue to make this water quality data available to NRETAS and DHF to support an assessment of any risks to recreational users at the reservoir.

The Manton Dam Recreation Area remains open to visitors at this stage subject to ongoing monitoring by Power and Water Corporation.
