Latest NTMAG magazine
Fellas
Hats off to Matt for knocking the story together from the info I supplied him with.
There's a lot of info on there (lots) and probably too much to attempt to digest unless you see a good reason to.
However, researching all of that stuff was triggered by all of the stories/myths surrounding lures (particularly what happens to light and colours in water).
From what I could see, very little of it seemed to have any firm basis and was simply oft repeated folk lore, myth and simply incorrect info.
I've put all of that info up as a reference point for what's to follow.
A simple guide on lure type and colour choice that's easy to understand. If you want to know more (or why) look back at the reference material.
The intention is simply to give the best chance of increasing catch rates. Definitely not a guaranteed path to success.
We all go fishing with a plan and that's what makes our fishing world go round.
We all just love it when a plan comes together.
But the beauty of having a plan to start with is that failure then comes as a complete surprise.
What caught my initial interest was looking at videos and photos of barra being held up with lures in their mouths. I started looking closely at the lure type and colour along with water colour in the back ground. The scientific explanation ( and folk lore) of colour and light in water just didn't stack up.
For example, I'd look at 15 examples of water colour and lure colour and found that in about 7-8 cases, there was something common about things. Not every time but enough to tell me that there was some sort of connection.
Then I heard one of Aus's "experts" talking about olour contrast in lure colour although he couldn't explain what he meant. He was obviously b....sh...g.
One thing lead to another and off I went on a trip trying to make sense of it all.
Happy to talk.

was a great read, i enjoyed. And yah, sometimes i reckon its luck of the cast, and in the right spot at the right time.. i reckon with half of my fish, its just a hungry fish that has the luck of having my lure wobble past it as it feels peckish, ha ha!

Thanks Ron for the great yarn. Really enjoyed reading it.
Bit of a fire out your way on the news tonight? Hope all's well.

Re: Latest NTMAG magazine
We're OK Matt.
Have lived around here for a long time.
Always has been a very hot place with temps regularly into the high thirties/low forties. It been windy a lot of times and we've had endless droughts. Very fickle environment.
On Wed we had the whole lot together at the same time and I've never seen that scenario here before. Been lucky maybe.
The wind from the northwest was like having your head in front of a fan forced oven with the door open.
Humidity hung at 8% which alwalys happens in drought times. Temp went up through the roof.
Ended up at 44.4 degrees with n/westerly winds up to 40km with gusts up to 65 km/hr and very low humidity. All the ingedients for CQ's version of a firestorm were in place and we got it.
More wind later in day today but temp down. More fires surrounding Rocky and more evacuations. Yesterday's evacuation of 8,000 from Gracemere has never happened on that scale here before. Mostly our major problems here are cyclones or floods and only very occasionally fires.
Its 7pm here now (dark) and all of the horizon to the west is glowing red off the smoke wall around the city.

Seems to be fires all over the shot.
Good to hear all's well.
I don't look forward to summers here, the place dries out fast and burns. '67 will happen again.

Great info about the colours Ronje
Hope the fires fizzle out or there is some rain on the way over there for you and all affected.
Been some lucky escapes for some, pretty bad for others though.

If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!
Especially when you can see them!

Re: Latest NTMAG magazine
Not a lot of rain on horizon, Dennis.
Worst over now (in this area anyway).
Couple of guys 26 and 27 charged with arson today or so news says. Must be more than simply burning off without a permit to be arrested. Probably denial of bail so locked up until court is fronted. Must have been some degree of intent if coppers thought arrest was in order.
New recent laws in Qld provide for max of 14 years for bush-fire starters.
If coppers are right, then a poor Xmas ahead for 2 families at least.

Re: Latest NTMAG magazine
Lure colours
Simpler explanation
The most useful result of all this research and conclusions is the how the pentration of colour into the water changes as the water clarity changes.
If you fish in clear blue ocean water, the graph on the left explains which colors can be seen best
If you fish in greeny coloured water like inshore or impoundments, the graph in the centre explains which colours can be best seen (different to blue ocean water)
If you fish in estuaries the color scale changes again with the graph on the right explaining things.
Look at the X underneath each graph. It moves to the right as the water gets murkier.
Barra fishing involves water of differing clarity (turbidity). Barra at headlands mean centre graph. Barra in estuaries mean the right hand graph. Barra in run-off clean water mean centre or left hand graph.
If the water is murkier than the right hand graph indicates (basically grey) and more towards brown like some floodwater, then the X moves further to the right (towards orange, gold and red) to show colors more easily seen.
Also you'll see that the visible depth changes from many metres on the left hand graph to centimetres on the right hand graph. Follow the X.
So, in dirty water we should look at orange/gold/red......shallow diver. If its got good action for the barra's lateral line then all the better.
Two very successful lures with those characteristics that come immediately to mind are ......................gold bomber...........reidy's B52 (gold or any with red stripes or both).
I think THAT is the secret of their long-lived success.

Re: Latest NTMAG magazine
Little bit more to think about.
Is there such a colour that works for barra in most conditions? There is one single colour that certainly works like that.
The alternative is to have a lure that's got 2 colours painted on it. One color that works in dirty water (red) and the other colour that works in clearer impoundment/inshore water (green - chartreuse ).
Put them together and you have an "all rounder" for differing water clarity.
Green and red. Guns and Roses.
Once again G&R Classic lures are proven barra takers and very popular.
I think that the above shows why and so there are lessons to be learnt.

Sorry Matt, just got to say itMatt Flynn wrote:Thanks Ron for the great yarn. Really enjoyed reading it.
See below -
yarn
noun
1. spun thread used for knitting, weaving, or sewing.
"hanks of pale green yarn"
synonyms: thread, cotton, wool, fibre, filament, strand;
2. INFORMAL
a long or rambling story, especially one that is implausible.
"he never let reality get in the way of a good yarn"
synonyms: story, tale, anecdote, fable, parable, traveller's tale, fairy story, rigmarole, saga, sketch, narrative, reminiscence, account, report, history; o
verb
INFORMAL
1. tell a long or implausible story.
"they were yarning about local legends and superstitions"
That stuff is definitely not a yarn. It may have an entertainment value but its right in the educational corner. You see plenty of yarns where 'ol mate' goes fishing , catches fish, drag goes buzzz, blah blah blah. At the end of the story you might have been entertained but were you educated in any way? If not its a yarn, if so it's an informative article.
Yarns are a dime a dozen, informative articles (or however you label them) are worth much more
