Hi all,
Long time lurker but not much of a poster on account of I haven't been fishing much, but after a long four years of full-time uni, part-time work and having three kids with the missus I've finally slowed down to the point where I can get out for a fish! Previously I think I've been out maybe 1-2 times/year in the past 4 years but no barra. I had yesterday off, kids were at school/daycare, so I hit Nightcliff with a cast net and a rod for livebaiting. Managed to pick up a half decent jack and a barra, both lived to see another day. I didn't have a ruler but guessed the barra to be shy of the 55, it really sucked letting him swim but it just means I'll have to get back out there! First barra in 5 years though so I'm pretty chuffed!

Good stuff there Andrew,
I have a top tip for you that'll solve the just undersized or barely legal questions though: I've got a small 55cm mark on my rod itself in the form of a small paint pen dot. Particularly for just this scenario as I've been there before myself.
Well done again, good to see you get a few fish landed on the first crack back at it. At the end of the day it's better to be safe than sorry with possibly undersized fish, hey it may make it to be a metery one day . . Also I think jacks are a regulated species too.

Thanks guys! I just measured the length of the EVA grips shown in the photo and that's just over 46 cm, he was probably around the 50 cm mark. I'll definitely be taking a ruler next time! I've got a bit of work to do on the LB front, prior to uni I had a boat so it's been a long time since I've done dedicated LB fishing. One thing I do remember though, live bait is the ticket!

8) Cool. Great result for dusting the cobwebs off .
I also have a notch marked on the rod for when I'm out on the rocks away from the brag mat , saves a lot of time running back and fourth .

I was not on the wagon by choice ScottMac, pretty glad to have fallen off haha! I've now measured out 55cm on the rod and will not be having this problem in the future.

What do you guys use around here for floats? In the past I've used balloons or styro but after seeing all the rubbish in some of the creeks here I am going to go for something reusable and a little more responsible. Will be used to float live mullet over the foreshore rocks around Nightcliff.

The ol wine cork does the job drilled out with a small bit with match stick as line stopper. Natural finish for stealthy presentation or go all out and add reflector tape or glow in the dark paint for night use. Or prism tape and fluoro paint for day use and costs almost nothing.
