Great read as usual, and great fish too, probably bigger than most people caught in their boats that day   :catch:

Hi there,

Thanks for the replies.
And yes, I do hope that we were not too hard on Sheeby, after all he is the one who not only showed us how to catch these Milkfish, but also the one who got the biggest one of the day.

And yes they are fun to catch, but I still wonder about eating one?...
A guy from Hawaii just wrote to me to say that they are excellent...

And yes some much fish/wlidlife in the city, it is I am sure a chance that few cities have...

And Seano, yes it looks like a familiar spot, Sheeby has been writing about catching Milkies there for a while...

Have a good day,
Pecheur

Don't worry about me Pech, I'm not that delicate haha.

I've tried eating one and it wasn't great. The fish was gill hooked and bleeding more then any other fish I've seen (probably why they are so quick!). I tried frying some which I'd never do again. I tried wrapping a piece in foil with vegies and seasoning, a bit of soy and lemon and grilled it. It was no mullet :P. Even in the foil with oil and vegies it was very dry and not that enjoyable.

How do the Hawaiians cook them?

This is what Mark White (the lure maker) wrote to me:
"Here, what they do is gut the fish, leave it in the frig for a day or two then spoon the meat out and make fish cakes with some Ginger and Green Onion. Up here we use the phrase "broke da mouth" when something is really good. :)"

And I was just talking to my Tai neighbour and she told me: Next time brought it back to me, I'll cook it.

So there you go.
They are so big that a fish a week should be enough...

Hey Pecheur,
I decided to give the Cullen Bay rocks another go this afternoon. I'll never find the best times if I don't get out and try. It was pretty quiet from 4:30 til after sunset. There was one small bit of surface activity and I spotted a milkfish. Tossed poppers, slices and a few soft plastics around and picked up this fella on a soft plastic. I'm starting to think mornings or middle of the day are better off the rocks than afternoons and a bit of tide movement helps. Might catch up with you guys sometime soon.

Hey AdzaNT,

Nice little fish, must already have given a nice fight on the baitcaster.
For the tides, I don't know, this is typically not the tide I would have picked for this spot, and it worked out well...
And yes we should catch up on the water edge one day.

Aslo, I was wondering if any one has ever had a Milkfish sharked while he/she was working it?
This question came to me as I was trying to land my first and so far only one. I was trying to reel it in for a long time and kept telling myself: I hope no shark comes around and eat this fish!

Telling that to Sheeby later on he told me that he asked himself the same question a few time.
And we did see a shark coming among the mullet, close to our feet this very morning
So what's the go? Do shark dislike Milkfish or do they get one once in a while?

Have a good day,
Pecheur

Hey AdzaNT, I ended up on the rockwall aswell, well the small one. There was a lot of activity around. Small queenies and trevally on the cullen bay side of the wall and much bigger fish busting up on the Mindil Beach side. Couldn't get a hit from the bigger fish even when they did come close enough. Just a couple of small GTs in the end.

Hi Pech,
I think it could be the location that helps us not to get sharked. Just one big sandflat. I bet if it was over a reef we might be in trouble. A friend of mine got told that milkies are the best shark bait around.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies.

Rammers, yes you should try it one day, it is a real buzz.
(Even if I still dream of a monster Barra  )

Now for the Mullet inclined people, if there is any here is what a friend sent me today:
"The mullet is best smoked, gutted from the head down the back keeping the stomach intact, take guts out from top, flatten out, sprinkle with salt and hang (from head) in sun for 1-hour until most of the liquid has dripped off (the salt sucks the moisture out of the flesh and drips away). Some then sprinkle brown sugar on the flesh before putting into the smoker – beautiful (smoke the row as well, cut into slices and fry, black peper & lime juice on toast.

The milk fish is highly regarded by the Filipinos
"

And as a matter of fact a Filipino lady told my wife this morning, that the next time that I catch a Milkfish, I should not release it, but give it to her, that she really like them and buy them at he market in the Philippines.
So now I just have to hope that I can get another one another day...

Have a good day,
Pecheur
