G'day, just joined after visiting the site a few times.
A bit about me; I worked on the Main Roads for 23 years in the Kimberlies and 17 years for the Main Roads in NSW before retiring to Ball Bay, 50 km north of Mackay. Used to fish the Ord and Keep rivers, the dams of northern NSW and now fish the Newry islands and off the rocks at Ball Bay.

Keep River
I'd like to hear a yarn about the Keep River - it looks interesting with all the rocks etc near the "boat ramp" - bet it is a river that takes a bit of learning. Only fished it once in 2002, looks like it needed more exploring.

Re: Keep River
G'day Matt, it was a long time ago, 1967/1979, so things will have changed....The secret of it all was to wait until the neaps were on, which meant that the landlocked pools were devoid of tidal run for 3 weeks. The water cleared and the barra could be seen escorting the mullet schools. We would cast just ahead of the schools, using sinking ABU Killers, allow the lure to come to the barra and twitch the rod tip. 10 casts, 10 barra on 1 outing.Matt Flynn wrote:I'd like to hear a yarn about the Keep River - it looks interesting with all the rocks etc near the "boat ramp" - bet it is a river that takes a bit of learning. We went another 10-15 km north of the rocky area, on the old oil drilling tracks, turned right and made our way through to the pools.
Check it out on google earth, hey?
Cheers, bobj.

G'day Bob and welcome.. it's a great forum.
I had a fish in the Keep river Last year. Went out to lagune station with work and pulled into the keep on the way back. Turned right just after the crossing on the way back to Kunnanurra and went in about 5kms. Lots of rocks and snags around and got a couple of fish. When I went back up to the top of the bank I got the fright of my life.... right where I had been fishing there was the biggest croc I have ever seen 6mts easy..
It just poped up then went back down and swam off... I don't intend on ever going back there to fish of the bank.
Lagune has some awsome fishing spots as well but they don't let people in there anymore as far as I know.
cheers
