West Arm this weekend

Post by Woodie »

Hello fellow forum users,

Just moved up to darwin and thinking about fishing the harbour this weekend. With lows of around the 1.7-1.5m mark would that be sufficient to navigate a bit around west arm, namely pottering around on the leccy, or would I be confined to one spot for the period over the change. I dont want to cover the whole arm in a day just have the freedom to move a little distance if needed/desired.

All reports and old posts on here state how rocky it is and can be treacherous on low tides. Boat in question is a 4.7 topender.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers,

Woodie

You'll be fairly restricted and yes, there are plenty of rocks. It's one of those places you have to have to get in early on the tide and explore carefully, or explore it on a neap. A great fishing spot tho.

If you want somewhere simpler, try Woods Inlet. The draining gutters on both sides produce a few barra, and a couple of small rock patches near the mouth sometimes have a fish or two at low tide. Just outside Woods Inlet, at low tide on a calm day, the shallow rocky edge of Talc Head often holds barra.

After having never been there before we have gone three times in the last month. The Fishfinder mag was spot on with regards to locations of rocks so if you don't have one do yourself a favor and grab one. There are a few sandbars throughout also but like Matt said if you take it easy you shouldn't have any dramas.

I am led to believe there are also fish there but I am yet to prove that :D

Cheers for the advice Matt and Hursty.

Had a poke around Woods Inlet a couple of weeks ago, allot of bait in the system, a few follows by what appeared to be small blue salmon but not hits.

Have grabbed the FFF book and will use as a rough guide for major structure.

Keen to give it a crack hopefully land a fish or two.

Cheers,

For what it's worth we tried LOTS of different lure types last weekend and the lure that got the most action by far was the silver B52. This colour....

Cheers Hursty,

The B52's are definitely a good thing.

Will post a report on Sunday Night/Monday, wont be a Shady Camp epic tale but a report none the less.

Cheers,

Woodie
