Upstream East Ali

Post by Melv »

Anyone know if you can get up to the rock hole on the East? Pretty sure there's been a sandbar blocking access the last couple of years, hoping the big wet might've shifted it. Been at least 25 years since I've been there, keen to get out there some time in the next month or so. Also any feedback on Merl campground would be beaut

Yep Rock Hole accessible particularly in a small boat. There's a bit of shallow sand but the depth rises with the tide.
Merl is pretty much like any other Kakadu camp ground. It's got it's share of mozzies.

Cheers NTFizzer. Only got a 4.5 that draws SFA so should be sweet. Be having a crack regardless. Was pleasantly suprised at how few mozzies and bugs in general there was at Cooinda but always come well prepared for them, Thermocells rock. Any idea what height tide breaches Cahills? Like I said, last time I fished it was 25+ years ago with the Saltwater Flyrodders club. Me and my mate were in our late teens so there was as much :smoking: & :drinking2: as there was :fishing: so the memories a bit hazy.....

Funny how you can live in a place for 40 years and just stick to your regular haunts then your time becomes finite and FARK! Too many places to tick off in too little time before we go.

Hi Merv, you'll be right to get into the rock hole. I suspect the tide runs over the crossing around ~5m or so. Yeah live life with no regrets!

Upstream of Cahills Crossing is the prettiest and most stunning river I have ever fished here in the territory.

There are a couple rock holes, first one should be able to get into and that directly across from the 'lookout' where the tour boats go. If you keep going up the main river there is a huge sand bar on the right and that blocks access off to the next rock hole. Goodluck getting up there, was at the upstream ramp yesterday and not much water at all, saying that it was low. But as you go up it doesn't change that much.
