Start ya Bastard

Post by chaffe »

Having a bit of trouble starting my 2 strk 115hp yamaha lately, wants to go but just won't quite tick over for some reason. Had the carby's cleaned by a mechanic but hasnt really helped. A quick spray of 'start ya bastard' and it ticks over first time with no issues starting for the rest of the trip. Anyone know if I'm doing long term damage by spraying start ya bastard into the air-intake each time we take the boat for a run (about once a month)?

I should also point out I've trawled through a few other online forums for similar posts and there does not appear to be a conclusive opinion either way.

if you can get it started with that it bmeans your gettn spark so it then points to a fuel problem, proberly air or needs more priming

i recon the mechanic didnt do the carbs properly. pull them off and do it properly. engines are simple. Compression, spark and fuel/air. easy to eliminate. pull the plugs out and earth out, crack over and check spark. compression test, and fuel. if its starving for fuel i could only suggest the carbs. check ya fuel lines on the motor when you prime it for leaks also.

those yami 2 bangas are basic but great motors.

Cheers - It is only ever the first start on a trip that it is hard. After it fires up once it starts easily for the rest of the day. I don't mind giving it a quick spray with the Start Ya Bastard to get it going in the first instance (Great Product!), but just hope its not doing any long term damage.

I'll have to play around with it in the New Year to get it starting easily. For tomorrow's trip I'll just be using the Start Ya Bastard!

Hey mippa, I recall that you said you are a qualified outboard mechanic once. If you ever want to run a half day and full day course on outboard on servicing and trouble shooting. I'm sure you get a dozen people like myself who be keen to learn and pay for your time.

start yah bastard is an emergency diesel spray, to "force" combustion even without enough combustion pressures on diesel engines. don't rely in it too often. you may notice a lot of pings and rattles while the engine starts? not good. if the engine works ok after a warm up via start yah bastard spray...? check the auto choke.

hahaha Neil miss you too mate.

yeah Lads im more then happy to help out. if you ever have an issue pm me. each motor is different but i can try point you in the right direction.

more then happy to show you how to service your motor etc also. massive saving doing it yourself and its easy as once you know what to do.

so now it changes up a bit. it runs fine once its started. as Plate Size said i would check the auto choke if it has one or see if the manual choke moves when you lift the leaver.
