reefs or rivers this weekend (thinking of dundee or shady)

Post by mickxx »

So ive set a daily plan to get my boat trailer completely fixed and ready to go by saturday and have a few mates who are reliably not late and wanna go for a fish.

Option a)
I was thinking of heading to Dundee Sunday morning pending weather and chasing some reefies and with a bit of luck something toothy, but its coming into the big tides and iv never been that way, is the current (esp a bit wider) unfishable more then 2 hours either side of tides? ive got the bible to play around with some marks its just a long drive from Darwin to learn the hard way.

Option b)
After such an abysmal trip to shady last weekend off the water, im pretty keen to get back on the horse and head up there sunday morning and fish the high tide in some of the creeks. just 1 quick questions re: shady
- i know u cant catch mullet in there, but can you bring livies into the system to use? (was thinking of getting them from eliz river or somewhere on the way, leaving the net at home).

Option c)
throw some crab pots in lizzy sat arvo when i change the boat rollers over, and pick em up sunday morning and hope for the first time ever someone doesnt check em.

Hi Mickxx Dundee is ok on springs but dependent upon where you go you will find strong current sometimes. It takes a while to figure the place out, for longer time fishing options you need to go wide to find slower water. Long Lost marks north of Blaze are OK.

You can't take live bait into the Mary river system (Shady Camp), it has to be caught there. There was a lot of tarpon around the barrages a couple of weeks ago, you could try catching some of them on a small soft plastic..

Nothing stopping you catching tarpon on small flys and taking them to the mouth

Mickxxx, i was thinking the same, blue or barra. Mate you can fish the blue throughout the dry or just when the runoff finishes. Go the rivers and target the barra while it is on and most rivers at the optimum level ATM. You won't getting his chance come may/June so I say go now. Just my advice. Cheers

I'm with SusieQ. Target the barra whilst they are in season. You can fish Bwater all year round. Either way go get them! :D
