Popper fishing

Post by Young_gun_fisho »

Am I the only one who struggles to catch fish on poppers? I've seen plenty of people on this forum catch good landbased fish on poppers, all i catch on them are longtom :banghead: . Do any of the popper fishing masters have some advice for me on how to catch fish on them? Thanks

Haha, nice story. Will try that, any advice on popping for pelagics? I know i did contribute to another thread a year ago about chromie and popping advice at east point just in case anyone wants to point that out, but to be honest i was just eager to contribute something to the forum and just said advice that i saw others giving. I'm a bit embarrassed about it now, so do forgive me as I didnt really know what i was talking about. Just before i get roasted :chef2: :D

Re pelagics, you just have to be there when the fish are on, as Eman says, mornings and evenings. And night time for barra.

Main issue I had popping barras was getting a hookup, sometimes the popper would just fly into the air.

Buff Creek boat ramp area can produce big barra on poppers at night at low tide during the week when it is quiet, but beware crocs.

We have had good sessions on mackerel and tuna on popper when fish busting up, experiment with retrieve to work out what triggers the bite. Flat out making popper skip like fleeing bait, slower large bloops, shorter faster bloops. We used 105mm Glaxo rooster poppers and fish couldn’t help themselves. Also went down to channel island last Sunday morning dropped a few queenies on same lure had a hookup on fast retrieve and one hookup on slow retrieve. Heading out in the boat this Saturday to try and put some mates into some pelagics. And also give stickbaiting a crack. Oh and don’t be worried about size just try and keep an eye out on what bait they are feeding on and try and match it. So far with Barra all I’ve learnt is night time like flicken said and don’t forget to pause on retrieve like when using minnows or sp’s

Good luck. Will put a post up after Saturday on how we went

Thanks for the advice, my current setup is a 6000 saragosa on a 10kg silstar crystal blue powertip, can cast heavy lures well. Would that be enough?

that set up will work fine, start with small lures, 75mm roosta in white/ red or a stickbait and vary retrieve working current lines and just keep popping till you loose so many fish that you end up running 65lb line, 100lb trace on a 1400 stella
