Over the limit

Post by Dundee Hombre »

I wish that I had taken a photo, this week I have been in Borroloola working. I was with a colleague when we saw two interstate 4 x 4s towing tinnys, fully equipped for extended camping and fishing. On the back of the two 4 x 4s were freezers and small generators.

What were they expecting? I can only hope that the local police head down to King Ash Bay for the odd check up. How can tourists be educated in fish possession limits.

A Quick phone call to the authorities with a good description would help possibly??

I wouldnt consider it being a 'nark' ....? I would consider it 'protecting' OUR fishery...

After all... Carrying freezers is a bit over the top isnt it..?

I agree Hemi, problem is people don't understand the fishing rules of different states and territories. I am against anyone taking over the limit and you can't use ignorance as an excuse. Why do tourists or visitors expect to take fish away and not respect the current rules. You can Have more than the limit at home but not travelling, nor in the boat. A caravan is not a home....

You do realise that they can stay under their bag limit in all species and still require a freezer. 30 fish per person is a lot! If they got 2 in the car or boat its 60 fish. Add your bag limit of crabs or crays and god knows what else you definitely need a freezer. Because they got a freezer doesnt make them guilty of any thing. Got any more evidence??????? If not well.......

"How can tourists be educated in fish possession limits."

Plenty of locals do the wrong thing, maybe start with them first?

They have a freezer so they must be poaching.....good one.

Two blokes out at Jabiru 2 weeks ago, got dobbed in by someone like Dundee Hombree for having too many fillets in their freezer. Police turned up with a grin on their faces and searched their caravan. They had their limit of barra (5 fish each) neatly packed in to the freezer and nothing more. They had been fishing the East and catching and releasing all their fish.

I agree DH- call in the troops immediately. Napalm the whole camp
those interstate people shouldnt be allowed to travel up here for a long stay with some of the conveniences of home.

If they were QLD plates, they would be more aware of bag limits and undersize fish as the rules in QLD are 100 times more strict than the NT anyway :eating:

An old photo from when we used to camp out at the weryan for 4 weeks, freezers were packed with steaks, frozen meals, block ice and frozen 2L bottles, when youve got 8 blokes and 4 eskys to keep cold every day you have to manage your ice, yeah we all kept our bag limit of barra to take home south but never took any more than we were entitled to,was always plenty of people there doing the same and fisheries were there a bit checking bag limits and freezers.

When we head up to Coburg we always take the genny and freezer... Never even bought any fish home from there though.. Its purely to make ice for the esky so we can have cold beers for the whole week.. getting a bit excited there mate...

Awesome set up. We can talk until we are blue in the face but at the end of the day Fisheries are aware of the issue and if some people break those laws its up to the people responsible to catch them to do just that. If more resources are needed and we are serious, then allocate more resources.
I havent been down that way but I am sure there are plenty of signs at ramps n things. Good point made by NEWFISHERMAN as well.
