So right on time 0500

the alarm was blaring and I was quick to shut it off. The chill in the air was beyond a joke and I pulled the covers back up over my head and dozed back off. Around 0700 i rose and began to prep the days meals for a trip to a rarely fished area. Only after a big flush or peak flooding is it accessible with a prop driven craft as later on in the year you'll need an airboat to get in and out of its channel. 8)

It was a pleasant 12 degrees as I walked out and started up the ute and hooked the boat on.

Leaving at around lunchtime instead. Soon I was on the road a quick stop at the servo for ice. ( forgetting the paper for the comp ) :bonk: and grabbing a snitty burger for the road i headed out.

A huge bushfire raged nearby enroute and birds of prey were hunting the firefront grabbing the fleeing residents as they tried to escape the flames. The road soon turned to dirt and was in good condition for a change and shortly afterwards I was undoing the ratchet strap and loading in the rods.

The launch area was pretty straightforward and I had the ute parked up about 4m away from the tethered boat in moments. I primed the motor and it roared to life excitedly I opened up the throttle heading off down the lagoon in the complete opposite direction of my usual areas. A bit of a quick flick at the first corner yeilded no hits but in the 15 minute session a good boof was heard well back along the grass edge upping the keenness factor a bit.

I pulled up the motorguide and put the rod away. Time to see if we can get through this year.... :?

I planed past the entrance to the channel surveying the area intently, the lillies were gone and it looked deep enough to get in this time too. I checked the sounder as I cruised in slowly in shallow drive with a hand on the lever to knock it into neutral as i munched up a big stump. Fortunately I made it past the ancient paperbarks guarding the entrance without such drama and continued onwards. 0.4 was reading on the lowrance and the cloud of silt and chopped up weed confirmed it was indeed shallow as f@rk. About 5 min of this stuff and then 1.2m was a bit more promising so I trimmed the motor in and opened up the throttle again.

It was deep enough to troll the lures in only a few bits down this way most of it is actually quite deep but a lot of the weed comes to within 500mm of the surface in much of its areas. Some pockets are big whilst others are not with areas of old fields of lotus lily stalks folded on their side from the floods in 3m creating ideal cover for the local Barramundi and Saratoga amongst acres of weedbeds. Some areas the water was cloudy and dirty while in other bits it was crystal clear

The resident salty napped casually on the bank as I got a few pics before returning back to the stump I had just passed. :croc:

Sending out a lucky old original little lucifer in Elton John it splashed down right in front of the grassy edge. A few twitches to get any immediate response went untouched so I retrived it with a slow steady pace to get it down a bit . It bounced off the stump and travelled back to the side of the boat untouched but looking up at it was a barra about 70 ish . More twitches and a pause ... nothing. Few more casts and a few more follow ups. Sometimes they would flash at it but no solid hookups. All the bigger fish pulled the hooks as they powered through the ample cover as most hits were deep inside the danger zone.

I went through the tacklebox trying to find something they would hit more agressively for hours ... no luck really a few times they would hit a weedless plastic but I failed to hook up each and every time on the bigger fish landing about a dozen rats to 51cm. ... A few saratoga rounded out the days efforts as well as a couple of tarpon. As the sun dropped lower in the horizon the mozzies were pretty fierce down that way and I had 3 coils going from about 6 oclock onwards and was now wearing jeans, long shirt over a t shirt, shoes and socks.

I planed the entire way back full rip out after sussing it out on the first run with the sounder and made it back unscathed after nearly cleaning up a 3.5m salty in a section only 8m wide and 600mm deep at 40km/h on the way through. I reckon i would've been high n dry for sure if I had hit it like the jetboats when they miss a corner. I did try for a bit after dark but the mozzies were too much and my thermocell was in the camping box at home :banghead: . Buying one for the boat next trip to bunnings.

So where the bl..dy hell is it I hear you asking.? :?

Heres a clue.

And another good shot of the location

Just COROBOREE  . ....but left of the ramp where they used to run the airboat tours. I have never seen another boat down that way and no airboat there either this year so bring spares and tools to sort out any dramas you may have with stumps or silt and weed chunks in your intakes if giving it a go....

Sorted out the mozzie issue one for the boat permanently, so you cant forget it. I stocked up with spares for the next few trips too. Once you have the canisters you can refill them too. I Definitely think they are far better than coils.

Just said to the bloke next to me " Geez, this write up reminds me of a place I haven't been able to get to for a while" then I read the last piece of the post and said "yep, that's the spot I was thinking of" thanks for reminding me, haven't been in there in years.

Well...... I just couldn't help myself and snuck in there again but in the dark this morning getting a good crack at it.
Was glad I'd packed the hoodie as it was a bit nippy at race pace (as this motor only has 3 speeds : stopped, trolling or flat out ) on the way down the billabongs main pools and tight channels in the darkness. Low clouds of thick fog made the channel edges hard to see and I almost zigged when i should've zagged on the way through. . Perhaps I was going a bit fast for these conditions  I pulled up in no time and deployed the motorguide. I had it all to myself again and nailed a few straight up on the surface lures and then weedless placcies as the day wore on 'till about 0800  Unfortunately I'd left the paper in the ute for the potential round 5 seadogs comp entries :banghead: Trolling past the houseboats produced a ripper battle with me almost getting smoked around the 5 knot marker chain. All of this unfolded right in front of the eagerly watching crowd of a dozen or so onlookers most of which had just disembarked from the 2 guide boats on the ramp with what turned out to be a filthy bl..dy catt!e in the low 70s. Aswell as a rare mid 30cm sooty trolling the lucifers up near couzens in the rockhole.

BTW the airboat tours are back now too for those interested. 8)

Also as another random bit of helpful info for those headed out over the long weekend : :fishing:

A few barra guides trolling the rockhole with the leccy or super slow in and out of gear with the main motor did OK too. Both DNA and Obsession were up there putting their clients onto barra in the mid 70's.

:drinking8: hope this helps you get onto a few rippers.
