We usually do 3-5 day trips so everyone pays for they own beer and then fuel, food, bait etc is divided up evenly between us

Hopefully the non-contributing deckies (and they're out there in force by the flavour of this thread) are reading this and give themselves a decent upper cut.

I didn't kick the tin for rego/depreciation but when I was boat less and fished with a mate regularity, apart from 60:40 trip contributions I used to take his rig in for a service every 6 months; book in, pick up, have it serviced, pick up the tab and drive it back to him with a frosty 6 pack to plan our next session. Rudimentary really.

An interesting read so far. Some valid points made. I'll add my spin then.
90% of the time I fish alone. For whatever the reason may be I tend to find myself in that situation. But to be honest I do like the solitude and really there's only about 4 blokes I tend to fish with on a semi-regular basis.
I'm a bloke that never asks for anything. Cash for expenses, food to eat or anything to drink. My declined always offer and most times I'll just grab a sanga or have a beer.
My reasoning as follows:
1. Yes, I was always going fishing in the first place regardless of whether a deckie came along or not.
2. I don't know their financial situation so I'm not looking to make anything awkward, or expect anything.
3. If a deckie comes on board it's normally cause I want the company....not a deckie.
4. 10 years ago when I first bought my boat I didn't sit there and think "ok, when I take the boat out I'll get Jonno in and he'll share the costs, so it will be all good."
I get bigger kicks from seeing a bloke catch good fish rather than myself so I'm genuinely happier for it. I'm a firm believer of pay it forward so when the offer is made from the deckie to chip in I always just reply, "no biggie, you'll take me out soon or it all works itself out in the end".
Sometimes I sit their and think maybe the good luck I've had in life comes from little moments like these? I don't know...but I just feel like that. Lol!
My disclaimer is I have a 4.35m boat with a 60 on the back (although it does hold 120L underfloor) & I'm not in a position of financial stress so I'm ok with it.
Once the new rig is built I may reconsider this approach......hmmmm but probably not tho.
Each to their own and there's nothing wrong with that either.

Im with most here that deckies pay there fair share, help with loading, unloading boat, clean up and pay for anything lost or broken by them, though with harbour trips I dont bother but extended trips definetly, I also usually get all beer and food and then add this to boat and car fuel costs then divide up evenly, find it easier to load eskies properly this way.
Running costs for a boat are all mine as I was fully aware of this when I bought my boat, additional cash always gladly accepted towards replacement props from stumps etc.
I take a few different deckies and seems to work, when I take the wife n kids though things change, im up for it all then lol

I enjoy my own company and I’m usually solo as well. The only thing I really miss a deckie for is launching and retrieving but ive got that down pat.
I had a couple of kids out recently and the elder one said he could drive. I asked him to drive the car forward a few metres up the ramp. He jumped in and after a while nothing. Then he said ‘which one is the brake again?”
Get out!

Costs should be shared evenly. What's for free today???? If they were going with a guide it would cost them $300 ish. As goodz says if they don't pay the. They won't be invited back, I've had a few and they won't be invited back. It's simple curtousy and appreciation for being invited out in the first place.
