Re: Should the supertrawler be allowed to fish Aussie waters
This quote illustrates the sorry state of affairs ... "Subsidies that expand fishing capacity, including for vessel construction and modernisation and operating costs (particularly fuel), are estimated to total about $16 billion globally each year. This represents close to 20 percent of the total value of marine catch. By making it profitable to fish when stocks are in decline, subsidies offset the economic incentive to fishing operators that would otherwise exit the industry."
In other words, the one thing that would always limit a commercial operation in the face of dwindling fish stocks - plummeting profits - is being short-circuited by huge subsidies that allow these boats to fish even after fish stocks have crashed. They are paid to keep catching ...
There's some brilliant minds out there, eh!

Very difficult for me to comment on this subject and keep it clean but,, NONONONONO
quite simply the world has gone crazy, green's closing huge areas of reef for green zones (that are not heavily fished) and then at the same time letting this freak of a thing loose on anything that swims

The tuna industry support the trawler so they can provide food for the tuna farms.
it takes 5kg of food to make 1kg of tuna. something is out of whack

Sink it, sustainable my Ar5e. Remember there was a time when they could fill up on Tuna by using a "Pole". If these stocks were still as good as they used to be they wouldn't need trawlers at all, they would just go out and fill the boat as they used to.
And who gets the profit from this raping of the sea? I bet its not Oz.
