Should the Cover be on a Camp Fridge/Freezer?

Post by jpb15 »

Has anybody tested the Question, Is a Fridge better in the Cover, or not?
I have heard different answers, but I think they are better off without the Cover up here.
I have seen Engels Work really Good, with, and without the Covers.
My Personal experiance with other Fridges, is uncertain.
The Temperature that I have felt, on both Fridges with, and without Covers, they both seem to get Hot. They might be struggling, at the time, Due to Heat, or Low Voltage, I admit.
But I think Heat has to be able to escape better, without the Cover on it.

I have two different brands KickAss and Engel and use the covers on both for two reasons. One is it stops the outside getting knocked around, two it definitely helps insulate them a bit. Down side is when the humidity is high they sweet a bit overnight.

Heat should escape if the cover is designed properly.

Stops all the scratches, wear and tear.

In hot climates it 100 % helps.
As suggested is shouldn't stop ventilation to the motor. But will keep radiant head of the insulation, there insulation will work much better.
When you do big trips on the boat. Simply putting a matt on the Eski or better still wet towel, giving it a wet up every few hrs will make the ice last twice as long.
If the fridge is is in direct sun light a bag will make it much more efficient, but I would do anything I could to keep it out of the sun.
If you want it to run even better, a small fan blowing across the motor will make it run even better.

Better with a cover. Only down side is I have used my 12 yo engel 40l as a drinks fridge on the back verandah and the cover has caused a bit of surface corrosion where air can get in around the holes for the handles and lid. Moisture condenses and can't get out. In hindsight I would look after the metal a bit better - regular cleans, dash of oil on seams that might rust. (or buy a plastic fridge).

Arb do a stainless steel fridge. Ain't seen it up close yet, but they are talking it up as a ute / boat fridge. If it's as good as they say will be awesome.

The heat from the compressor gets away OK thru the vents it is just the outside of the box sweets under the cover some mornings. Not always just now and again.

I also have an old engel I use without a cover and it is not as good as the one I use with the cover.

Australian Direct for the KickAss brand. They are well made local in Australia.
