It has been about 20 years since I went to 4 mile. But surely a 1 year dry season closure would help get on top of the Salvinia problem.
A one year closure to get on top of the problem would be great. Hell 6 weeks would probably be enough if a barge was taken down there all tinnies were used to scope the weed up. Burn the bulk of the weed and let the weevils loose on the rest.

AFANT should be at the forefront of the temporary closure and to the point where they don't agree on a said closure unless they are a key part of the removal of the closure.

Matt Flynn wrote:Rope put across the South Alligator years ago to stop boats was a salvinia control measure, creating a no-go zone. Beats me how it would control the weed given that it floats downstream, perhaps a tiny chance it could become stuck on an outboard leg and moved around.

It floats down the South Alli in clumps during the wet season, haven't heard any calls for all the South to be closed.
Must have been a politician that came up with that control measure. I wouldn't have thought Salvinia would be a problem in the downstream portion of the river. I assume that the issue is up on the flood plains?

Closing four mile hole wont prevent the spread of Salvinia........now if you could somehow stop the wet season or prevent birds landing on the billabong and traveling to other water holes that might help.

The main enemy here which needs to be highlighted and worked towards preventing is the aquarium trade and people irresponsibly putting foreign species in our waterways.

AFANT is strongly of the view that Northern Australia must learn from the mistakes of the more populated southern areas of Australia in regards to biosecurity and our waterways principally in regards to the introduction of invasive foreign pest species of fish, plants and reptiles.

The cost of restoring rivers and water ways that have been impacted by invasive pest species amounts to millions of taxpayers’ dollars on individual river systems just to return these rivers and waterways back to some lower level of environmental health. AFANT believes stronger measures for education, prevention and enforcement need to be put in place on the aquarium trade to protect the waterways of the Northern Territory.

If you think salvinia is bad just wait until some irresponsible member of the public decides to release his pet tilapia into your local waterway!!!

Agreed It should be illegal to keep and sell non-native tropical fish in the NT. Too risky and there's plenty of native fish suitable for aquariums. Same go's for keeping pigeons. Darwin is the only city in Australia that is not infested by the flying rats.

As a fisho that used to fish 4 mile back in the late 70's it seems a shame to see the place spoiled by a poxy weed. I have great memories of visiting the buffalo catchers out there and pulling fish from the billabong to feed to whole camp.

I was recently on my way to 4 mile and decided at the last minute to go to Alligator and Red Lillie so it is probably 20 years since my last visit.

I would put my hand up as a volunteer to go out there and help clear out some of the poxy weed if the government (both Federal and Local) came good with the equipment.

Simple NO vote from me on the closure there are enough restrictions already happening in the NT fishing industry. But don't get me going on that one :fubird: :fubird:

Cheers grumpy (hope the mossies are better than they were in the 70's :D :D :D )

Yeah I remember when the Finniss had lots of Salvinia. I am glad that system has been rehabilitated. It would be nice to see the Kakadu systems fixed up as well.

A mate went for a drive last weekend said he was going back to fish it this weekend.
said not so good for trolling but flicking weedless would be OK.

This is second hand info but he is pretty reliable.

Cheers
