Re: Poll: Does the NT need boating DUI laws?
i don't see what the issue is - people over the limit on say the Murray have killed people so years ago the limit was brought in and enforced - guess what happened - big reduction in accidents, injuries and deaths....but also I recall a report years ago that showed that there had been a massive reduction in road accidents involving drivers towing boats or returning from days on the river and being DUI.
Isnt this a good thing?
I'm all for having a beer out in the boat as I am after work or sport - BUT if I'm the driver then I'm only having a few - have a couple and stay below .05 and you have nothing to worry about! If you're shitfaced then how do you get the trailer reversed down the ramp legally......and then get it all home.

Re: Poll: Does the NT need boating DUI laws?
I disagree with it but in saying that it "generally" is a non issue for me when i am skippering my boat due to the fact i am usually flicking lures when i fish rather than trolling or bait fishing. The danger is interpretation e.g camping up for the night and tucking into a bottle of bundy to help you sleep and getting done the next day or having a few quick full strength beers , cause i don't drink mids, with a bite to eat for lunch and blowing say .07, just more regulation for the territory and unfortunately the tip of the ice berg.If anyone thinks voting labor out will solve the issue i have bad news, the CLP will ride the wave of popularity to get in but once the law is passed under this gov it will NEVER get re cindered. They are both as incompetent as each other unfortunately. My 2 cents.....

I don't think it is unreasonable but I assume it would relate to person in charge of a vessel on the water only.

Darwin Blue - Most of my trips these days are overnight for simple reasons. Better chance at figuring out the fish and multiple chances at the same tide. Plus there is always an x factor during the night. Day 1 I would steadily suck down my mid strength beers. I drink a few but it's usually over about 17 hours. Am I over 0.05? Most definitely. Do I ever get poop faced? Never. And I have never put anyone in my boat, nor any other boat in danger.
The next day I might have 2 or 3 in the morning but always make sure that I'm dead set stone cold sober to retrieve the boat and drive home. And anyone on here who has fished with me will attest to this.
There is a big difference between being over 0.05 and being poop faced and dangerous

Gary Higgins - what a f-wit

I see the problem the government has and the responsibility they have in dealing with it but I find the arrogance in which they do these things aggravating. They polarize it to the extreme ends of the spectrum without engaging the sensible center. They are very out of touch with the mainstream Territory community. They seem very elitist to me and that is a big problem.
Elites don't think with common sense because acknowledging common sense makes it harder to justify their worth in society.

It's a hard call , I'm with Lats on this one as I too enjoy a camp up and being able to have a few.
But I have seen some very pisssed skippers at ramps over the years , so testing at the ramp should fix that.
I just hope it doesn't get like NSW , I was on a boat last year we got tested 3 times in one day .
It is standard practice for them to do a breatho on every boat they stop and from what I saw it had nothing to do with Safety checks just . $$$$$

Hard call. I think that it is not unreasonable to have an alcohol limit but maybe the water limit needs to be .08 or something a bit higher that allows people to enjoy the day but stay responsible.

Anyone want to buy a boat? Or a house, for that matter.
The beginning of the end of the final frontier.
I was first attracted to the joint for the lack of rules, regs, traffic lights, speed cameras, parking meters, etc, etc, not to mention the laid back lifestyle and old school values. All gone or soon will be.
Even got harassed by a bike cop for lane splitting on my Harley the other day. It's legal in every other state and I can't find anywhere it says that it's illegal here. Nothing better to do I suppose? Maybe catch the little sh!ts stealing cars and breaking into houses?
Might as well live down south for half the cost. But I hate the cold!

My point exactly Lats and i couldnt agree more, there is a huge difference between being .06 and being so rotten you fall over on the boat ramp!! but when you are on the water it will be impossible to tell if your 3rd beer for the day will be the one that tips the scales or your efforts from the night before have you in trouble.Lats wrote:

i feel sorry for those in the fishing comps. imagine a great day down the Daly, knocking a few scores on the board, big long days and you've had a few sherberts, get past browns and there are the water police stopping every boat on the way upstream for a breatho and getting booked. Too many grey areas and no doubt they will need to look at rego and licences for craft, i'd have rather had those come before a BAC. I enjoy a drink but i do it early in the day and make sure when i drive home i'm below the limit.

I agree there should be some type of limit but .05 is just ridiculous as part of living in the NT is having a few Tin's while fishing . I have 2 children and we have had some close calls with young wankers hooning down the river and taking corners on the wrong side of the river I think they should focus more on dangerous driving and educating people what side of the river to drive on . If the boat is anchored for the night there should be no limit

One term Government if they introduce this cr.p. Tell me who new this was on the table with the alcohol review.
Too many hidden agendas with this Gov
Time to leave the Territory and find a place somewhere to hibernate to.
