WTF is with the pilchard limit? A couple of blocks of frozen pillies and you could be done. We don't even get pilchards in NT waters. What is this trying to achieve? Can someone attending the AFANT AGM please bring this up with Fisheries and get the theory behind this. I can't go, I'm going fishing.

A 1 kg bag of squid could also have you done.

Laws can only apply to species caught in NT waters...

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
Ok I went to meeting had a good chat and a beer with few FFF guys. Beer cold bbq tasty. Giles spoke very poorly in my opinion Van Holter not so bad.
So far as a summation goes.
Amateurs- the fisheries are just dreamers. Closed areas too far apart, they throw the jew and Macks to the wolves because of time on hand after having a reef fish. The thrust comes across to me that we know this is not going to affect many people but we have to send a message to people. Christ almighty Sherlock the people who will get the message are already are doing the right thing it its fines you need to send the others not not a $&@#% ing message. The changes affects only 4% of the surveyed people.
Commercial - they nailed it the 50% reduction western zone only thing hits the nail on the head they intend to push most out consolidate the others to leave only a few after a few years. If they are still an impact buy them back when they are 10 or 12 not 70 or more, good job.
Charters- pathetic, I was horrified to realise looking at Steve Mathew's presentation that a boat with 4 on board can catch 60 fish, all at risk , a boat with 7 on board 60 fish, all at risk. A boat with 8 on board can take 120 fish all at risk but and here is the clanger a boat with 20 on board can take 300 fish ( general per person limit x 20) of which only 120 can be at risk. This is why the charter industry isn't making a great big moan about it they can take as many times the limit of deep water job fish etc on box charters as they want up to 15 each person. My first read and logic told me the were limited to 8 times the gppl no matter how many punters on board. That element is a crock of shite and a blight really on a suite of reforms that it would be possible to say that although not without shortfalls were at least in good faith. That over 8 on board bit is just on the nose. I was so flabbergasted as the tables dawned on me I grabbed the guy next to me " that can't be right" and then the presenter explained it in detail.
Put it another way boats on 5 dayers can still call in at the tiwis and get ther 8 times the ppl of at risk jew snapper etc on the way out then head out to the box and keep fishing for another 15 fish for every person over the first 8. Personally I don't see this as being in the spirit of the law ... And as I heard today a lot it just dosent send the right message at least not the message I am get shoved down my throat. But people believe one thing it's what is coming and it will be here before the end on April. Or if it's not they hope we start to implement it ourselves say ... from today. Like I said hearts in the right place but they are still dreamers.
Talking is over this time its going to be the law so I will complain no more.

Definitely seemed like a chore to be there for Adam. Will did ok but still deflected a few bullets.

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
The CM showed his contempt to us by arriving very late. Very poor form.
His body language during his lack luster speech just confirmed my long held belief that he didn’t want to be there.
He even tried unsuccessfully to deflect all questions to Will
More polllie speak on the promises they made before the election.
Again the average punter gets slugged while the FTO’s can do whatever they want.

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
The FTOs arent getting off scott free. There's a bunch of changes behind the scenes that weren't discussed as well.
Personally, I think the rules are a good START. They are still well above the limits my clients are forced to adhere to

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
I have never understood how the amateur fishing assoation can also represent the FTO's. It is very miss leading, plus there is very different objectives of both groups.
To me looking from the outside in, this is the biggest problem with afant. I may be wrong, I'm happy for others to explain the advantages of having both groups represented by the same body.
Maybe there needs to be a new representing body formed called rafant, real amateur fishers assoation.
Both groups are needed, both bring in $$ to the nt, both need representation to gov etc, but I can not see how one body can achieve to represent all their members views. You mose well chuck in the netters and trowlers in afant too.

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
Hey Mick,
You'll find there's only a handful of FTOs represented in AFANT.
I actually don't think it's such a bad thing having both represented by the one body . Overall we are both (recs and FTO's) pushing for a sustainable fishery and are often fighting a common enemy. It's a sad reality that fishos in Australia are bl..dy useless at stepping forward and defending their fishery and I don't see that every changing! Having both groups united to fight the big problems that effect us all gives us a stronger voice. Be thankful we even have a voice in the Territory! NSW and SA have both suffered from having multiple small parties that are too busy whinging about each other than taking a swing at some REEL issues. We participate in the most widely practice sport/recreational in Australia, over 1 million people annually wetting a line, and yet we have historically been a toothless tiger when it comes to raising our voices. The best thing to ever happen in NSW was the alliance of the Shooters and Fishers. If that didn't happen, I shudder to think of the state of NSW fishing would be in now. But I digress. A united voice is important, and you've got some pretty passionate blokes at AFANT fighting on your behalf.
*I should note that I regard guides and charters as 2 very different beasts.

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
Cheers for the reply, as I said I'm on the outside looking in. You are right tht the guides type set up will have many things in common, and many common goals.hottuna wrote: *I should note that I regard guides and charters as 2 very different beasts.
I have concerns with the charters with 8 plus on board. I think there should be a goal to faze these out to n the long term. To have 20 rods down on my be patch of reef can just decimate the fish stocks.
It is a side issue I know, but I think this is an intergral part of reef fish protection. It's hard to stop those who have set them self up already, but you could stop new large charter boats appearing. Also encouraging the long distance charters by having tighter restrictions for areas close to darwin, and still allowing those 4 day trips out to the box and beyond to help spread the fishing pressure.

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
Hey Mick,
Part of those new FTO regs I touched on is a freeze on new FTO licenses in the Western Zone.
The close of Lorna and Charles should be applauded. I would've liked them to be bigger, but they have been well selected. The flow on effect of these closures for the harbour should be pretty strong.
I attended the NT Guided Fishing meeting a few years ago when the idea of this closure was first broached. Thor from Fisheries gave a great indepth presentation on the whole process behind the selection of areas and reasons for. Similar to what was displayed at AFANT on Saturday, but much more in-depth.
If you ever get the chance to have a chat with him, his a great bloke to talk shop with. Thor Saunders

Hi all. Thanks hottuna for the glowing report! I am happy if anyone wants to chat about the science behind the decisions PM me or I can be contacted through the Fisheries website.

Yeah Thor gave a really good talk backed by science a few years ago and he got bagged by the dumb-arses at the meeting who basically said 'I aint gonna change nothing' - I felt sorry for them

Yeah Nomad,
It was pretty frustrating to listen to a couple of squeaky wheels!
Thankfully a few have moved onto greener pastures
