Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
I think the rules are bullshit my self. My biggest concern is the closures.
How would you like to be a charter boat that can't fish Charles point wide or Lorna shoals. How much effect will this have on their businesses and tourist numbers.
If the afants presidents fishing store was in Darwin and not Katherine do you think AFANT would support the decision ?..

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
This just about sums it up for me Dennis. From what I have seen you get to go fishing more than most people I know. Have got a boat that can do plenty of miles and target many different species. And a guy like you is making the decisions for the rest of us!will just have to look for some new areas to fish or try some different tactics in shallower water if you want to let heaps go.
Or target the pelagics once you have a feed and have some fun with them
most of the water I fish in round the Perons is less than 15m, jigging and have a ball.
Most fish are able to be let go at this depth, biggest goldies I have caught down there so far was in 8metres, 74cm, can easily let them go in there, plenty of jew in the same place.
And they fight heaps better as well
I would rather catch a few less now and know that the grandkids, one day will have some to catch and be able to have as much fun as me.
If sure there are plenty of blokes with 12 footers that would love to go catch big goldies trout etc. And when they have enough for a feed go catch a few macks etc. What you guys on the AFANT committee fail to realise is that everyone isnt in the same position as you.
From what I have seen you have killed more big goldies than 90% of the population.
This is what I see is wrong with the whole show. Bias views from people on AFANT that think everyone should be like them.,
Fisheries research by tournament anglers
I suppose its like a lot of stuff going on in the world at the moment the silent majority being lead by a vocal minority.

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
I would like to see
No take for Golden Snapper
Closures on aggregation zones for Jewfish
50KM exclusion zone from Darwin harbor for FTO's
Slot limit 50cm to 85cm for Barra
15 fish limit is ok outside managed species. I can't see a problem with keeping 15 trickies/flags. If there is a worry on Red emperor trout etc put a 5 limit on them.
While you have a 3 limit on snapper you are encouraging upgrading. If the stocks are as bad as they say I think its the only answer.
Like someone else said I would like to see some evidence though!

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
ghound, I fished all these areas with my 5 metre Savage way before I ever went there with a bigger boat, only managed to get the bigger boat 4 years ago. Havnt really got any spots further away than before, I just like fishing the shallower water with lighter gear and having some fun.ghound wrote:This just about sums it up for me Dennis. Used to go to the Perons from Dundee and stay in the small boat overnight, or go from Channel point a couple of times a year, and used to visit Melville from Leaders or Buff Creek and camp or stay in the boat.
Just getting a bit older now and was eventually able to get a 6.5 metre boat with a bit more comfort.
When I go out now there are plenty of boats the same size, and plenty around 5 metres that can do the same.
With the weather we have here in the dry it is much easier to go out from Dundee to Sail City than it used to be to go to West End of Rottnest off Perth, but used to do that as well all the time, and catch a few
Just love fishing I suppose.
When I came to Darwin I had a 4.5 metre quinnie, that's what I used to explore all around the Vernons, Dundee and over to Melville.
It was a good sized boat back then, I reckon the average would be bigger now, at least 5 metres, don't see too many smaller than that trolling at the mouth of Sampan.
Killed big goldies, more than 90% of the population? You think?
Or do I just show people some pics so they know they are still there?
How many are caught that you never see pics of?
If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!
Especially when you can see them!

For arguements sake.....
How many are you going to kill ghound!?
Even if they totally banned goldie fishing, how are you not going to catch them? They are like rats out there! Then you have to throw them back & theyll die of barotrauma...
The only way not to catch them is to not fish... Are you going to give up fishing so you dont hurt goldie numbers???

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
Times have changes Dennis
Me and my dad used to go everywhere in a 15ft clark with a 25hp Yamaha
Soldier point on Melville, Cape Hotham, field Island you name it. Before bag limits killed a scary amount of big goldies as well. Something that I am not proud of. We once went out to emu reef with a map and a compass (no sounder). And caught a big heap of goldies no trouble at all.
My point with the new rules is if some one like you or I goes out every second week with two deckies and keeps 9 Big Goldies that's 234 Goldies a year. If some old bloke goes and fishes the rock bars in Middle arm or Bynoe harbor 6 times a year and keeps 10 each time which is doing more damage?

Like Dennis says I think Goldies are more prolific in turbid water say under 8m. If they put a ban on keeping them I think it would definitely help. Clearly there would be some incidental catches that would die of barotrauma. I feel this number would pale into insignificance next to the problem we face due to people upgrading.

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
Thanks for the response, some good ideas. What I'm especially interested in is how you translate your obvious experience into a better outcome. I note you are going to the AFANT AGM, which is great - it looks like plenty of passionate fishos are content to bag the new rules and the associated bodies providing input and making the decisions (all care and no responsibility) but don't want to waste their precious time getting involved. Everyone wants to see the science, yet plenty don't want to participate in surveys. No-one wants to pay for a fishing license, yet they want more policing, more science, more buy outs and so on.ghound wrote:I would like to see

I'm not sure what the answer is but I know that you'll never satisfy 100% of people 100% of the time and if we stop making decisions we're toast. If fishos really care about the direction of fisheries management they should get involved however they can, if they simply want to throw their 2 cents worth in from an armchair after the fact i.e. post the consultation, well......form your own view on that.

Hi NBN
Don't get me wrong far from an expect and don't profess to be.
By main gripe is there seem to be a lot of opinions by people that have vested interests.
I truly believe that instead of AFANT the Government should hire an advisor to sort out the poop from the clay so to speak and make recommendations for them to act on.

You've obviously got plenty of rubber on the road, you're passionate, you've got considered ideas and your getting involved. Cant ask for more than that!

Re: Do you welcome the new NT fishing rules?
NBN and AFANT
When are you blokes going to catch up with modern technology and put your proposals out over the net so as everyone gets to have a say and not just the elected few at a meeting in one night.
Everyone can get to have a vote over the net not just a show of hands of those there and then call that an overwhelming majority of rec anglers because it's not
Do you think every one that fishes lives in the city and can make it to your meeting or is that just convenient for the selective few
You know this could be a lot easier and more convenient for people over the net and you would get a better perspective of the views of the little people out there
I ask you "Is this what you really want" The views and thoughts of everyone that fishes or just the views of a very small minority that will be at your meeting
I ask you " Who do you really think your kidding
I'm all for the conservation of fish stocks and I was there when it all started and a lot of the young sports fishermen/women of today were not even born
With todays technology you can get a better response to what you want to know and what you want to hear but you certainly don't look like that is what you want
You wont see me at your meeting I will abide by what ever goes through because it's law but I do believe me going to your meeting wont make the slightest bit of difference to whatever has already been pre selected
Come on here and bag me when you pull your head out of the seventies and catch up with the modern era
