Both what we in the NT call Sweetlips. Don't ask me why 2 different fish go by the same name.
Fillet cut out the blood line and cook fresh on the BBQ.
Here is one I got out off Channel Island.

They pull pretty hard!!!!

If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!
Especially when you can see them!

Re: FISH ID HELP
These fish (the first light-grey one in the post) show up on forums everywhere. The names blackall/painted sweetlip/mother-in-law/slatey bream are all correct. Here's a link ... http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/28_8870.htm
A possible reason some people say they taste great and some don't is that some may be affected by iodine, which also happens with iodine bream caught out wider from Darwin. Iodine bream are very good to eat if not tainted.
I am told the trick is to open the gill cover and smell them. Apparently blackall are popular down in Hervey Bay because they are rarely affected by iodine in that area, although it is a ciguatera hotspot for other species, particularly mackerel.
I say apparently because this comes from heresay. I haven't eaten blackall, or even tried smelling them. I've always just released them, wishing they were goldies.
As noted earlier, the second fish, brown sweetlip or blubberlips bream, is universally disliked on the table, but they sure go hard. Schools of big ones have swum under my boat on the flats at Sadgroves and near Channel Island during neap tides, it sure gets the blood running until you realise what they are.

Re: FISH ID HELP
The unusual taste attributable to both fish comes from their diet. They inhabit the same waterways as Dugong which eats seagrass.....vast amounts of it...and inadvertently consume shell fish including the shell. To protect their digestive system the Dugongs stomach coats the crushed shell in a laquer substance which makes it smooth. In time these balls of covered shell grit are ejected and sink to the bottom where both the sweet and painted sweetlip consume them almost before they hit the bottom. Many Dugong can be found grazing with a school of both unpalatable fish species eagerly waiting to pounce on their vomit.
Its not a crisis unless there is blood around.
If there is blood around......well its a police matter...

Mother in law fish. cr.p eating. Nice picture though. They grow nice and big up this way. Caught a meter plus one on gGroote a few years back. Good effort with that one.
