I'd say familiarity plays a big part.
I've always used Humminbird and find them really easy to use and navigate the menus. I played around with a mates Lowrance just recently and found it a real PITA at first but started to get the hang of it after a few days.
I've just upgraded to the Solix Gen 3 and besides it having a few initial issues with the unit shutting down, which turned out to be corroded wiring, I'm really happy with how it performs.
Which sounder to upgrade to?

I ended up going with a Garmin ECHOMAP ultra 125SV
Keen to get out to give it a run.
What’s the best way to get a heap of territory marks on it? Can you use sd cards with marks off a lowrance?

just lay-buyed the HDS 12 live & Hook reveal 9
HDS 12 mainly for fish finding & Reveal for GPS, back up (redundancy) in both
I did notice that just lately the HDS12 Live unit has risen in price.

Insanity is a good place to hide from reality!
It is not how long the fish is but how long you have fished & how long you've wished.......

Update on my Garmin 8412. I love it.
they update the software regularly to iron out any bugs.
I just email them with the problem and within a few weeks they have a fix.
im talking about trip log dropping out each time i turn it off, so its nothing massive but something that i wanted fixed.
Ive never had anywhere near the support with lowrance

If you're wanting to move nav data around like waypoints, routes etc, the touch screen Lowrances are the way to go. Easy as.
If you don't want to "knob-twiddle" much go for a Garmin. Similar to what blowski's using them for.
I've currently got a H'bird s/scan that works very well until I want to change something. Then whatever it is that I want to do becomes a learning exercise all over again. A real pain (for me anyway).
Have you bitten the bullet yet?
