Mine are only 5" sounders and they are permanently mounted to the console. A mate takes his 12" sounder out of the boat when travelling.

I know some do, I have never taken mine off the console. Done shady camp, leaders, cobourg, 4 mile etc. never had an issue.

I'm not a rich man and I haven't got a flash sounder with all the bells and whistles but it's not a cheapo either and for the 30 sec it's takes to put on and off it's not worth taking the chance, even if it's just from buff creek to home the sounder comes off.

I take it off for the dirt, you could also get a rock fly up and smash it

I agree with JAH. Its only 30 seconds. One less vulnerable thing to fail on the journey.

Mind you they get shaken about on the water anyway.

The thumping and bouncing on the water is far more severe than what they cop on the road

I have 2 built into the console so hard to remove. I remove the 12” one from the brackets
Years ago, I was at a Sydney boat show and the bloke from Lowrance was giving a speech and said – Never spray or lube the connectors. They could short out and it causes heaps of damage. I stopped doing it after that
