One reason i went Humminbird was that it had a user defined cone angle in 2D mode that was three times wider than the HDS. Search area equal to bottom depth for the Humminbird as opposed to one third of bottom depth for the HDS. Say in 9 meters of water, search area 9 meters wide for the Humminbird instead of 3 meters wide for the HDS.

HBird 997 CSI for the last three years and very happy with the results. Great support from the HBird team with regular updates on software adding different features.

The HBird works well in the deep water but really earns its money in the trolling runs when trying to find fish amongst the snags. Have previously posted screen shots of Barra sitting amongst the trees and you can even tell which way they are facing.

I have seen and also used the HDS-8 and was equally impressed but found it a bit harder to use. All comes down to personal preference...... Humminbird Vs Lowrance........Holden Vs Ford....

Best advice is to get out and use both systems before making up your mind. But the best advice is to get the biggest screen that you can afford irrespective of which system you are looking at buying.

HDS Vs Humminbird??

I've had both. After many, many years of being a HB man I recently made the move to Lowrance and prefer the HDS. I reckon the Lowrance picture is much better. Even though the user interface is very different, the HDS is not difficult to navigate through. The HDS (Gen2, not touch) was over $1000 less than the equivalent HB.
So HDS gets my vote.

Blinky, would you like to share with us how much you paid for your HDS-10 including transducers and structure scan and where you bought them from?

Are you questioning my honesty?
I paid $3,124.00 from I & OB. Compare that to the RRP of the 10" HB at $4,499.

Buy the lowrance HDS10. We have caught 250 barra + last build up sounding them on the lowrance.

Blinky, most would agree your HDS-10 setup is quite impressive from screenshots you posted and now they also know where they can get a sharp deal and all from a local supplier, thanks for sharing.

I really like my 898 bird, never had a problem with it. Got external aerial for GPS, its almost instant, soundet reads at full noise, menu is very easy to navigate. Side scan works every well, tip, set the width about 3 times the distance of the depth, I have got images that are amazing, a white dot for the fish, and the shadow of the fish on the bottom, you can actually see t sillouette of a Barr a, head to tail.

Biggest advantage of the bird, is the easy set up, no black box, one transducer, and easy menu.
part from that, it seems the majority prefer HDS, I've used both, both are awsome, but for a Techno dunce like me, I prefe the bird.
