What is a good all purpose bait for yabbies and cherabin, and how often should nets be checked.

Soap isn't really environmentally friendly for our waterways...

I use a half a spud lightly boiled for cherabin, doesn't attract too much other bycatch.

I heard there are a lot in durack lakes. I have a question, can you use them to live bait in salt water, or does the salt kill them?

Weird isn't it, re the soap? Somewhere, sometime years ago, some idiot thought - "hey, let's try soap for bait in the cherabin pot!"

Either that, or someone was washing themselves in a lake or creek, and they got covered in cherabin. Or they saw a cherabin stealing the soap ...

Never bend over to pick up a dropped soap in the NT. Croc might get you!

Dropped soap is also best left where it is in Adelaide ...

They must be attracted to the animal fats in the soap, I reckon some pork rind would work pretty well

Using soap to catch yabbies has been used around Australia since the first settlers. Often used in the outback and the River Murray. Now Snappy Tom pilchards in Aspic is used or Garlic metwaurst if you cant get fish pieces or a chop

As far as where do you catch them. Just after the wet the culverts around Palmerston are full of them as are most creeks up here

Cooking them is easy. rule of thumb is cook them till they float with a bit of salt and some sugar ( that's what the commercials use). 2 or 3 gum leaves removes any muddy taste
