The only answer is to go out and crab specifically with drop dillies. I only use pots when I'm fishing in the location. I wouldn't hesitate confrontation if I suspected a thief. Maybe use the african method of putting a car tyre around said theif pouring petrol in cavity and playing with matches in the general location will disuade them.It may be illegal but pot tags are a dead give away to pot location. So hidden with black rope gps marked is the way to go.(without floats or very very very very very small floats)

.........this has been a touchy subject of late, but sitting here now a conversation between a few blokes who were out at bynoe last year has made me grin as one guy was telling these other two guy's after they were asking him how has the crabbing been, when he replied ive gotten over 30 crabs in the last few days and i did'nt even bring a pot with me they thought it was a great joke, after that week i don't even bother any more it just makes your boat stinky & muddy, but i won't stoop to poaching others pot's even though i might joke about it, as i know the nerve it hit's usually draws a response which i can find amusing having had it happen to me on so many occasion's

I used to to do a lot of crabbing out at channel island till i sold my tinnie waiting for my boat to get up here, anyway i used to crab up the little creek near sand island near creek mouth.
I put my pots out on dark and came back for them the next morning, as i was unloading my boat a tinnie came in with a tub full of crabs, easy 20 muddies, i asked how many pots they had been running, they say 2 pots and all these crabs in 2 hours!
Im thinking my pots will be full! I get over there, all my pots are empty with flippers all hooked up and a couple of legs also, most of my pots i take latches off and use zip ties, all had been cut, and just thrown anywhere, so no crabs for me!
I take my time heading back over to the ramp, I see the tinnie take off back toward the sand island and i load my boat and park at the top of the ramp and decide their justice.......
The only car with a trailer was a ute, obviously had dropped the crabs off to a mate waiting up at ramp, so i walked over reached under his bumper, behind his grille and pulled on his bonnet cable, up popped his bonnet, i calmly removed his dizzy cap and removed rotor button and threw it into the bush and then smashed his dizzy cap, then closed bonnet. also gave him 2 flat tyres when he only had 1 spare.
I knew it was this bloke as the muddies id seen in his tub had flippers missing and some legs gone, plus a couple of my lovely pretty pink zip ties i specially bought just for an occasion like that.
Caught red handed, he deserved it and i felt way better as i drove home laughing at the bastard!

Yes it might be a just payback but remember...what you did was illegal..... and as such the NT Police would have had to charge you if they were asked too
I by no means condone the crab poachers...in fact I have an immense dislike for them
but tampering with someones vehicle is not the best thing to do....maybe get all the details and call the MFEU...they love pinging pr*cks like that.
Just my thoughts

punishment
Sorry, unless you get footage of them actually stealing from a couple of pots you can't do that either because if you blame someone incorrectly - or worse - blame the crooks and they take you to court because you have no real proof they were actually the crooks - then both the poster and FFF might have to pay a defamation settlement.best thing is if you have proof of someone doing it take a photo of this p#*ck and put it on sites like this
If you only filmed the thieves pulling a pot up they might tell a court it was a mistake and the magistrate might believe it. You would have to film the thieves actually taking the crabs out.
Please also note that the NT Police do read this forum, so if you post admissions of an illegal nature you can expect a phone call. It has already happened.
As for the crab poachers, I will leave it to members how they deal with it. Legally of course.
Sadly, telling the police about pot thieves will probably achieve nothing. I don't think it would be high on their priorities, given their workload.
But given how prevalent the problem is it would make an easy hidden camera "sting operation" and I am sure the NT News would run the results on the front page if the pictures provided conclusive proof that the people were thieving.

Anyone Work in a bank or security??
I too have had pots checked and stolen, most recently at Woods Inlet,
Many years ago in NSW had similar problem, and a mate who managed a bank got some "scorpions" (the little devices thay put in money shipments that break and leave a dye trail EVERYWHERE when tampered with) attached them to some pots and put them out on a busy weekend and then retired to the boat ramp for a few quiet ales, and waited.... bit later on, in comes a nice new tinnie all crabs, gear and safety equipt in it including the two "low lives" was covered in indelible purple dye.....(when added to water it spreads even further) besides being funny some revenge was had, it was a bit hard to deny any wrong doing on their part......could try the same trick here
Cheers

Hey im back, i knew that some people wouldnt see things the same way i saw it.
I had been putting up with it for a long while and may i add that it seemed to be happening when the same vehicle was parked there beforehand.
I knew that they were the ones that stole off me, i didnt in any way harm them, i probably done $20 damage to their vehicle, but it was how i done it.
I only done it as i had had enough of it, spending my hard earned to head out and my money in bait and pots were being abused, so i seeked i little compensation.
I wouldnt reccomend doing it, but if you are sure that they are the culprits and they have been caught red handed then what do you do?
Ask them to please give the crabs to you?
I know its neanderthal like but sometimes a bit of rough justice is needed, the cops spend more time worrying about little things like this subject than other ones like my mates car being torched at the elizabeth river boat ramp, that case never even got looked at!
Again, im saying, i caught them red handed, they had done it before as it was the only place id been putting my pots for 12 months and i hide my floats and they still got raped.
So, im sorry for any tempers that my have flared over the post i made previously, but when im paying for it, no one has the right to steal it.
