Trawler working off Dundee
I noticed a Trawler cleaning up the tuna schools wide of Dundee Friday. I assume there is nothing to prevent the commercial fishers doing this??
I cant say I like the thought of our recreation fishery being harvested for cat food!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Trawler working off Dundee
Years ago would have been at least 20 trawlers working fog bay, they're bottom trawling for prawns not pelagic fish.
Think of 2 tractors scrub pulling wth a chain between them.....

If it's during the day and surface, it'll be banana prawns.

Pro mac and shark boats are probably drift netting it all by now. Or the bait boat purseining all the herring. They turn up every year about now.

Longtail tuna can't be commercially harvested, they are rec only.
Bigger issue might be the big mumma jacks being trapped out wide.

Nice to know my longtails aren't being slaughtered.
They fight much better on a fly rod than in a trawler net!!!!

Re: Trawler working off Dundee
At the AFANT AGM, some dude (I think it was the fisheries Minister or the head of Fisheries) said that there was a one off catch of jacks by trap fishing. He said that they moved and modified traps so it didnt happen again. Whether its still happening or not, I'm not suretrevor schultz wrote:Hey mat I heard a rumor about the jacks getting smashed out at the box what do you know about it ?

A one-off catch of jacks eh? Would love to see the mod to the traps that stops jacks and lets others in ...
