Almost every stolen or damaged boat posted over the years has had someone mention the possibility of an "insurance job".

Best to feel bad for the owner of any stolen boat posted and leave concerns about insurance jobs for the police/insurers.

I hope the owner gets his boat back, looks like a great outfit.

Interesting. Anyone else confirm this? Just asking because I take an interest in business cycles.

Insurance jobs are not on the rise as such. There are several insurance claims that are dodgey around town. Some are caught out some are not. In the past 12 months the only great rise in claims has been with cars. Due to the media always reporting keys are stolen from kitchen benches etc After kids breaking in. Most dodgey claims take that road.

Although most don't cover their tracks and we normally find a hole in their story and within a few weeks they either find their car or pull their claim.

Had a ripper not long ago with an item that was worth 6k lost over the side of the boat.

Social media showed pics of said item being worn after the claim date. The pressure was put on and the normal

Your treating me like the criminal response came out. Wah wah wah.

He pulled the claim threatened to leave the insurer and make a complaint against my license.

Three weeks later he called the insurer, apologised and stated he found the item and wanted to insure it???????

Must be one lucky fisho losing an item into the ocean and catching it three weeks later......

What happens to these people that do get caught out?.......Do they go on some sort of blacklist so the rest of us don't have to pay for their dodgy ways or what?

You would hope so...!?

But i know one serial insurance pest thats been caught and he still seems to have no problems getting insured easily..
I guess any insurance company will happily take your money? Its when you make the claim they nail you..???

Hi Brendan
ive had all of my gear insured for at least 40 years. My misus at thetime worked for several insur rs over 20 odd years and we got big discounts in premiums as a result.
Probably never made a claim for 25 of them, but when i neded to claim big stuff (car and boat stolen over a 10 year period) each time i was hamered by the insurer. And rightly so i think.
but i did object to being made to feel like i was a crim.
i understand that insurers get so many dodgey claims that they fel like all claims are suss. They should have better procedures in place , maybe they do these days but back then it was very bad customer service

Most insurers will take your cash. But if you have been caught out committing fraud they will cancel your policies. some, depending on the claim will report the fraud to the Police.
They share info on fraudulent claims between insurers at times

nomad
I understand Alot of our processes are very intrusive and the reason why you might feel like your being treated like a crim. But the ones that are dodgey always go off their tree, threaten legal action, threaten to cancel policies etc etc.

I myself have been investigated for a claim and had a work cover claim knocked back. The work cover was to hard to fight and I ended up just coping the bill for physio as I wanted to get back to work.

The processes can also take time dependant on the Insured's cooperation. But all processes are there for a reason and if not adhered to by the Insured the claim can be cacancelled.

I personally try and speed any claim up that is genuine. These claims are normally pretty straight forward. However, the moment we don't do our job properly they go to another investigator.
We have to show our processes in our reports and show we have looked everywhere for evidence of fraud.

So anyone with a genuine claim that is looked into. Take a breath and do what you can to assist the investigator and they will push it through as fast as possible

I fully understand Brendan. I had a tricked up 4x4 with every extra you could think of fitted to it. Every time I added a new trick, I advised the insurer and they were very happy to collect the additional premium.
But when it came time to pay up, the clown in charge of my claim just strung me out for 2 mths asking for rego papers, another set of spare keys, receipts for the stuff I had bought etc etc.
I was fed up and I told him that if the claim wasn’t sorted by a certain date, then I would go to the ombudsman.
He waited til that date and told me that he was referring the claim to the investigators. I said good at least then I wouldn’t have to deal with this clown anymore. They put it thru to the investigator and by 4pm on the same day, I had a call saying they would pay out in full.
It was just pure luck that the investigator used to work with me and had even be in the 4x4 with me. I asked him why the dramas and he said because I had so many extras. I told him that the company had no problems taking my $ - he said that there had been many problems with that particular bloke in the past.
I often wonder how I would have fared if I hadn’t known the investigator. i remember when i was an investigator (not insurance - govt) , you could sniff out something wrong from a mile away

I remember my missus telling me that the mantra with many of the insurers she worked for was deny every big claim. That way they could keep the extra $ for a bit longer.
Just remember that most of the multi storey buildings in Sydney CBD are insurance companies. They don’t make money by paying out claims.
One thing that people forget is that if you are refused insurance you will usually never be able to get insurance again – ever.

Like i said earlier, there is so much fraud that big claims should be investigated but it must be done fairly. i feel for the poor bugger who lost his boat. surely it will be spotted. its a wide load so they would have to get permits on a truck or even hauling it down the road.

Sorry for my assumption & whining of thinking that some one would store your pride & joy in that area. I fully understand that you would just leave it in the heart of Darwin & not expect any thieving low life kents tovandalise or take it, Yes I hope he gets it back. We had thousands of dollars worth of copper stolen off a secured demolition site on the weekend, am I surprised? NO.. Darwin is getting to occupied with filthy low lifes with no respect for other peoples properties..

I have it on very good authority that this boat has been found and towed back to Darwin. It was found up a creek on Melville Is, I believe the police are investigating and the boat has had a fair bit of kit stripped off it. It is now with assessors to see if it is financially viable to fix or is a write off.
No matter where you go, there you are!
