There'll always be the chance of incorrect measurements when involved in fish tagging.

Shrinkages are easy to detect.

What about incorrect growth? Tagged mistakenly at 52 cm when it was really 57 and then recaptured and measured 12 months later at 61cm. Superficially it's grown 9cm in 12 months. In a good paddock perhaps? Maybe. Its real growth is actually 4cm in a year. Entirely believeable.

There is still a lot of good data collected. How long free, where has it travelled from and to, type of fish etc.

Its not a real problem though. Just discount the length.

Its not a problem compared to some others though.

A 62cm flathead tagged and recorded only to be recaptured later as a 42cm bream! That's a problem. But it happens.

Could be a genuine mistake in transcribing data or simply sabotage.

Somebody caught the flathead, kept the tag and put it in a bream caught at another time. That wouldn't happen on this forum though.

Look on the tag returns as pretty good indicators and not simply gospel.
Watch it Ron, you will have people
agreeing with you if your not careful.

Hardly likely Andy.

I'd have thought most didn't know the story and weren't interested. Suits me.

Damb, so does that mean my little fella was actually bigger? :o Pity I didn't measure it straight as well! :banghead:

Maybe we should go back to just weighing them, but then we'd probably have to have 'accredited' scales etc. :bonk: I must be a typical Mexican, I just fish for the enjoyment of it all :D can't be bothered getting into this 'mines bigger than yours cr.p' :P

In a couple of fly fishing comps in Tassie they changed from weight to lenght because some people were pushing sinkers down the gut of the fish to win. :bonk:
Some people will cheat every time they go out. It’s just the way they are. big prizes make it easy for people to justify their actions

Golf is a great example. I've seen people who would otherwise never tell a lie cheat at some point nearly every round.
I've even seen a golf pro in a pro-am cheat. he was playing with me and a couple of my mates and never got a birdie or better all day. he came in with a minus score. (they mark their own cards) he won the comp.

On the shrinkage thought, I used to be 6’ ½” in the old lingo. Now I’m under 6’. All to do with the spine getting crushed. I don’t think fish have the same problem because they are fully supported in water

Nomad - you might have something there on the shrinkage and the spine getting crushed - although mine is probably due to a pair of thumbs rather than age !!

Bragmats are worst offenders in cases of shrinking fish.

Bragmat slightly folded on first capture when tagged.

A subsequent capture (when more care is taken in the measuring like making sure there are no folds) will show a smaller fish. Or measured on a sticker on gunwhale (no folds).

Some more tagging info.

59 more barra tagged last week in Roper and Daly with 2 over 1 metre in Roper. Hard fishing both rivers with Roper more productive.

That makes 1037 barra tagged in last 12 months.

A recapture of 1 of last years tags shows a 50mm growth in 12 months.

Be good to see some results from those tags as recaptures are made over the coming years.

I wouldn't mind getting in touch with John Reid the pro netter at Port Roper to explain to him what's going on and how he can help. He's bound to net some of these at the mouth.

Anybody have a satphone; email or other address for him? If so a pm would be helpful.
