Honda 50 power tilt

Post by BigBucks »

Hey Guys,

When cleaning my boat after my last outing I discovered oil leaking around the ram of my power tilt, the oil is now contaminated. So does anybody have any experience in changing the oil seal on a Honda 50 power tilt? the one that that seals the ram. It looks like a bugger of a job with specialist tools required to get the collar off.

Any help or advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

BB

Question is how bad is the leak and do you want to spend the money to get it fixed. The seal kit will cost you about $100 and the labour from a techy will cost about another $100. The main issue with doing it yourself is that specialised tools are required in most cases. I had a leaking ram on my previous 50hp 4 stk Yammy and as the leak wasn't too bad I just topped it (the hydrolic oil) up every few months and it continued to work fine - just kept an eye on it and wiped dust and oil build up of the main housing every time I saw it leaking... The best way to avoid the leaking is to brace your motor with a motor support when tilted up and travelling (especially on corrigatioms) and not to hit anything when boating! Either way it will cost you quite a few bucks.

Tool is pretty cheap, I had a yamaha knockoff one from supercheap batteries. I ordered all the orings from the tates for 25 bucks. It was a little tricky to remove the trim assembly and you havr to be careful with the trim cap (metal lid of the cylinder) but all up a 2 or 3 hr job

Damn it Theo! Where was FFF when I had my problem. I also found You Tube handy when it came to fixing / servicing my Yammy. There are a few entries on the www re fixes on the Honda trim that may help.
