I went deckie for flynnster the other week and we jumped in the boat and were half way up the adelaide when he says, wheres the keys. I patted my pocket...nothing...I thought o poop i just commited the worst sin and lost the keys, after a few seconds which seemed like hours I realised I had automatically put them in my sealed waterproof bag without thinking...........

1) don't loose the keys.
2) don't hang poop on the skippers special 'stinkin' lure rig......

I must be a bit of an anomaly, im pretty relaxed when it comes to deckies so long as they're happy to split fuel costs really.
I have a system of cleaning my boat/trailer and unless you fish with someone regularly they will not know this and might miss things you would normally do, etc. so im quite happy to do all that stuff myself.

I try to choose a deckie who might leave a good set of fish grips behind, or something equally useful :catch:

yes AM, getting better all the time too, its good when there are people waste deep at buffalo trying to line the boat up to get it on the trailer and the young feller drives mine on for me, don't even hav to get my feet wet!! :)

yeah nomad, might have to organise that again!!!

always good to get good deckies and have a whinge with them about the worst ones you hav had!!!
If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!

Especially when you can see them!

Agent86 and deep black were great on the boat. No complaints with either of them. Turtle and jazzy have also been great. I have no issues tying knots etc for them and sharing gear as long as the de lies split costs etc or offer to return THe trip and take you in their boat. Either way I am happy to be out catching fish and having a good time with like minded people even if it is chasing stinkin barra hahaha

Had a shocker of a deckie though leaving cr.p everywhere. Now if the fishing is hot this can be excused though on this occasion it was not. No fish lures and hooks everywhere all my gear all over the place, poop load of my good leader line lost CIA he could not tie knots bit did not want me doing it, all my beer drunk and then he would just throw the bottles over The side. In the end he was told of he threw another over he would be going in to get it. Never has this person been back in my boat.

Oh and still waiting for that $50 back you borrowed to buy yourself drinks and food. Yeah you know who you are.

Jeez BJ, and I thought I had some bad ones. I'm pretty relaxed about knots and gear especially as I'm a knot nazi when it comes to rigging for Billies and I don't actually like running other peoples outfits in my spread as I don't know the exact state of their drags, age of line ect  . BUT if you don't at least offer to help and share the costs in some way (cash, fuel, beers ,bait and trips in return or part thereof are all acceptable payment  ) don't expect to be asked back. And when I say share the costs I mean you pay your share or better! The owner of the boat and/or gear has forked out for the boat, gear, tow vehicle and all the ongoing costs that incurs! The least a deckie (or passenger at worst...) can do is fork out for his share of the costs for that particular trip. To put it in perspective my Billfishing gear is worth a conservative figure of around $5k the boat is $30k and upkeep is probably $1.5k (and keep in mind I am at the lower end of the spectrum when it comes to costs). If invited out as a deckie you get the use of all of this gear, I will drive the car all the time and the boat for most of the trip and my knowledge will be there to use and as an added bonus if you are a Billfish virgin you will be given first strike. All you have to do in return is bring your own food and drink and pay for your share of the costs on that day. (generally between $50 to $100 between 2 depending on location and distance travelled) Oh, and I almost forgot, you will watch the teasers! Sound like fair deal? Well 3 out of the last 6 have stiffed me on fuel ect. to varying degrees so they must not have thought so. And by the way they all got their first Billfish too. :fubird:
I know this has turned into a rant but the last one left a very bad impression. My boat doesn't run on thanks alone either and if you stiff me I am effectively paying you to go fishing in my boat. :bs: :bs:
Cheers,
John.

P.S Maxpowers list is spot on and yes sometimes it is just nice to have someone offer even if we are set in our ways and won't take you up on it.

I have this one deckie from hell and I don't know why I bother to take him out but I do always thinking he may improve.

In the last year or so he has
...Busted two knives
...Lost a burley bucket after being told not to put it out.
...snuck on his dodgy gear when warned not to bring it.
...Been late every time.i just drive off and he generally meets me at the ramp.
...Gave away my spots to a guy at the ramp when told not to
...Brings vegemite sangers every time and acts surprised when I tell him I hate vegemite.
...Has three rods out while I only have two.
...Lost a rod holder over the side then his replacement broke with my good rod going over the side

Thats all I can remember for now...He did tell me that I should talk to his ol man as he has a lot more stories.

...I took a guy out last year who swore his head off at me when I caught a fish and he didn't. He will never be invited again but the first bloke probably will..Don't ask why.I don't know.

Thought it was bad when I got to Mr Riverbabe's post, definitely no invite to go again. I fully agree with deepblack. I have a much smaller (therfore less expensive outfit) but the principle is the same. The guys I go with just share costs, generally the owner has no $s outlay for the day as he is providing the boat, vehicle etc. This is just accepted without discussion. I find it hard to comprehend some of the deckies from hell, like jarrah jack persists with. Why bother? I would be more than pleased to get the offer to deckie and have the benifit of someone else's experiences.

Im in my mid 50’s and I just thought that it was a young bloke thing.
You know, ‘we didn’t do that sort of thing in my day’ thinking.

Is it just a young bloke thing or do the ‘deckies from hell’ come from all age groups?

Nomad. I Definately don't think it's a young guy thing. Alot of the younger guys I have taken are inexperienced but pull their weight to the best if their limited knowledge. I have found that landbased guys make the best de lies as they don't get out much. I think they share the cost and do more work just for the appreciation of the fact their not spending another day on the land. The other boat users seem to be the worst bar the guys i mentioned above. Anyone on this site I have taken will all get another invite.

Anyone has the ability to be a good deckie, whether they have the common sense and respect to do so is another issue. I found guys with better boats then you and of older age think they don't have to do much as well their gear cost more and their the older one that deserves the respect and free trip.

Jazzy was shocked when I brought the ice, ice coffee in the morning and then slipped him an additional $120 to go to shady. Seems he has had some shocker deckies.

Having spent over $30k on my boat, ( I know there are those who have spent more) & lots of my (Valuable) time on up keep & gear, I really am happy to go fishin & take a deckie,

As Im a Car nut ...I ..will drive the car , I will though, expect the deckie to be able to back the boat in & retrieve it & & park the car.

Dont expect any money except splitting of fuel cost for car & Boat.

But I do expect the Deckie to offer to pay for lost lures , (especially after the first one) & lunch or at least to split cost or provide Lunch/Drinks.

Expect deckie to stow Minnkota when we move without repeatedly asking, to keep deck clear, to replace any lost Rods &Reels without question.

Expect him to offer to pack up boat for trip home , would like him to offer to help clean boat, but like most will not accept his offer....again its the thought that counts.

Expect at the end of the day to have had a good time , a laugh & possibly caught a few fish,

& the least of all, that the Deckie treat me like I would treat him...
