I'm telling you, this wouldn't have happened if there were more guns in American hands.

It’s so simple to fix, and yet they refuse to. How hard would it be to issue everyone with drones with guns mounted to them, incase this sort of things happens again. Problem Solved.

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

This is the wording of the oft quoted " right to bear arms" claim under the US Constitution 2nd Amendment.

The right is for the purposes of having a well regulated militia

A person can keep and bear arms for militia purposes.

So the question boils down to "what is militia?"

Most US states used to have militia (eg the Minutemen of years ago).

The US Federal Govt had been given authority by the various States to form a national standing army.

The term militia that remained in various US states was changed to State Militia upon national defence falling under the Federal Govts control to differentiate between the National Army and the militia operated by the respective States.

The US Govt refused to fund militia under State control so the importance of the militia then started to wane.

To satisfy further State complaints to Federal Govt about funding their militia units, the name of the State Militia was changed to the National Guard which put it back under Federal Govt control who then turned on the funding tap again.

Translating the 2nd Amendment "right to bear arms", the argument is now if National Guard is the modern day version of militia.

If so, then people can indeed keep and bear arms for National Guard purposes.

As the 2nd Amendment only refers to arms and that the purposes are for a well regulated militia, then it can only be arms suitable for a well regulated militia/National Guard purposes that can be kept and borne.

And who decides what arms are necessary for a well regulated militia/National Guard?

The militia/National Guard of course.

If the militia/National Guard decided that a well regulated militia included MEMBERS who were allowed to keep at home and bear their militia arms, then they have every right so to do without infringement.

However, if the militia/National Guard said that having MEMBERS who keep militia/National Guard arms at home and bear them does not constitute a well regulated militia then the MEMBERS can't keep and bear the arms.

To me, that 2nd Amendment actually has 2 conditions contained in it.

Firstly that the person has to be a member of a well regulated militia (National Guard); and

Secondly that the well regulated militia has to give permission for a member to take National Guard arms home and bear them around the place.

Allowing members to take the arms home is NOT an indication of a well regulated militia/Natinal Guard.

And who controls policies of the militia/National Guard?

The US Federal Govt.

That's my view about what the US debate is all about.

Who wants to bite the bullet about arms control in the US? pun intended.

Funny how nobody hears much about the militia side of that 2nd amendment.

If its now argued that the National Guard is NOT the modern day version of the militia units, then there is no well regulated militia and consequently no right to keep and bear arms by a person in the US because the reason for exercising that right without infringement no longer exists.

Therefore the right CAN be infringed upon by US Federal gun controls.

I recently met a lot of yanks from all different backgrounds and states.

They are all appalled by the mass shootings and were so surprised that the Vegas event took place. i of course said that it was always going to happen and that it was only a matter of weeks until the next one happened because of their obsession with guns.
They all thought about it for a moment and said ‘yes, I suppose you are right”
I said there were alternatives to everyone having an arsenal and although most agreed, there were still the southerners who went feral about it

I was on a day trip to Niagara Falls which included a visit over the US border.
The guide said his tour was delayed for 6 hrs at the crossing when a passenger failed to realise that carrying a hand gun on a bus tour over national borders wasn’t the done thing.

Just think about that for a minute, imagine sitting on a bus tour with someone on that tour is carrying a concealed gun.

Its just a matter of weeks until the next mass shooting takes place and we will all say how bad it is etc etc, but hey will fight for the 2nd amdt rights which could have never envisaged the modern weapons

It's a big week for Walmart (their $19 rental ute was used in the Manhattan attack). I don't see any liberals calling for the ban of utes, light trucks nor Walmart though.

Utes are useful and have a purpose.
What is the purpose or usefulness of an automatic weapon other than mass destruction.

You’re right Mickk, but airplanes also have a purpose but we all know the results of 911.
Osama Bin Laden couldn’t believe his luck when the twin towers collapsed, he thought that they might just catch fire and cause some damage.
The resulting terror caused airlines to spend millions in an attempt to prevent a recurrence. Strengthening doors, airport security etc etc

The basic idea of terrorism is to cause terror to people and make them frightened.

The organisations like al Qaeda, isis etc do want to cause us harm.
They aren’t just dumbarse sheepherders who hate infidels, there are some extremely intelligent people involved and they, like the average prisoner, spend 24/7 trying to come up with ways to cause us terror.

So the latest method is to use a moving vehicle to mow down pedestrians.

You can be assured that they are racking their brains to come up with some other method to cause terror. And something else after that and it will go on forever

But for the moment, all they have to do is hire a truck and drive it down footpaths and kill people
The knee jerk solution to prevent this is to install bollards to separate pedestrians from vehicles and that is just working into their hands because it costs us money and puts us on edge. Ie causing us terror.
Soon it will be something else and our law enforcement gurus are working flat out trying to work out what that might be

The mass shootings in the US is a completely different story.
The vast majority of mass murders in the US are committed by US citizens who have unrestricted access to multiple assult weapons and have no connection to isis, al qaeda etc.

On a side issue, I notice that the master of twitter has called for the death penalty for the driver involved in the latest vehicle murders. He is an idiot and by making such remarks, the defence lawyers will be rubbing their hands as a result of trumps gift to them

The biggest threat to Americans are Americans. I think it's funny that after Vagas the Pollies were all saying that nows not the time to be talking pollicy. Then with in 5 mins of New York they were talking about changing policy.
