NT News circulation ... what's going on?

Introduce yourself, talk about beer, crocs, headlines, dugongs or Paris Hilton.

NT News circulation ... what's going on?

Post by Matt Flynn »

Roy Morgan figures attached are presumably self-explanatory, according to their data the NT News and Sunday Territorian circulation dropped by almost half in a single year, from 2019 to 2020.

Aussie newspapers have declined in recent years but in some cases readership has levelled out or increased.

The scale of the NT News decline appears to be far greater than other newspapers.

What happened?

Could Darwin be the first Aussie capital city to lose its printed newspaper?

It might have been missed but the circulation drop was probably a result of the move to the small-format newspaper.

The NT News' zany approach to front-page stories might have had appeal a while ago, but these days there is so much quirky stuff on the web with Tik Tok videos etc that the newspaper may have less appeal to young people.

To hold a niche, newspapers may have to concentrate on supplying well researched local info and stories not otherwise available on the web.

Unfortunately digital platforms are heavily pirated.

Down here (Taz) there is still a large older demographic who read newspapers, the Darwin audience is much younger.

I used to be a track photographer at several NT motor sport events and NT news were always pleading with me for pics.
I had many full back page spreads.
One time I had the Full front page, Full Back Page and a double centre spread
Never once got paid - but they were helpful when I was after media accreditation passes to major events

I’m guessing it’s going to decline further too.
