The dust cloud from the trailer and still attached tinny enveloped the 4WD to the frenzy of the local cockatoos departing the nearby scrub as we pulled to a halt. (thankfully it was intact, as the road isn't the best at the moment ) and we were soon launched and headed out along the coast towards the next decent river system. The miles passed uneventfully and on a glass out run at full rip we were making a new record for this lap.

We pulled into the mouth and it was deserted. Sweeeet. ''Lines out'' was called and two REIDYS B52s hit the water and began their first pass for the day. A mate I'd bought out was swimming a blue and silver one and I was dragging a Bigger version BIG B52 in kryptonite. The first few passes were marking the odd one and they looked like solid fish. Soon enough the kryptonite had added another strike to its list and line was unloading off the baitcaster over my shoulder. A few jumps and one of the most epic struggles to assemble the net later and we had our first fish measuring in at 77 so not a bad start. It was quickly despatched and bleeding on ice moments later.

We looped back to our start point and began a bit more colouring in on the lowrance charts. My mates lure wasn't swimming as well as we would've liked and was swapped out for a tigerlily bomber that I had found in a tree a few wet seasons back. Eyes lit up a few more passes later as i called out a few good marks right as we drove over a decent snag filled edge..."Hit" .... Clint yelled excitedly as drag peeled off but less than a second later his dejected slump told me it was gone. "What a loser" I chimed in helpfully.... I think he said a few unprintable things as we got back into position to start the run again.

"Lines out " "send it " the two lures splashed down without fouling and we began our lap for the umteenth time an hour since the last one landed. Sure enough the fish we had just lapped were still holding in the area and we drove over them with the lures well back. Passing the marks we had laid early on the call of "fish on !!! " bought me out of my daze. I gassed it towards the deeper water in a bid to pull the fish out of its snags towards the middle. Line was unloading off the old faithful Abu 6500 buckling the 8kg ugly stik and massive headshakes could be seen bucking the rod as it popped its gills and tried to shake the lure free.

I sat at idle for a minute or so and we didn't seem to be gaining much with still nearly 1/3 of its line out I made the call to back down on it like a marlin before it got sharked. Idling back we were soon within 50m or less and I shut down trimmed out the motor and got the net out. It was far from tired and an epic battle unfolded around the tinny with the rod immersed up to the grips multiple times as it went balistic on a short leash trying to wrap up a prop or cut us on the opposite sides chines. The first call I'd made was "c@tty" jokingly knowing from the headshakes it could well be a metery hearts in our mouths we watched as the leader knot broke the surface of the murky water.

AAAWWWW YEAH. 8)

we exclaimed as the first glimpse dispelled any doubts about it being a c@tty. 1st net shot was abandoned and the fight continued. It fought strongly all the way but the 65lb braid and carbon drag wore it down pretty easily. Eventually we had it in the net and as it hit the deck we were pumped. For a last minute effort he had pulled in a ripper and added another metery notch to his collection. well done mate  .

Few pics later we were soon cutting another lap going for an even bigger one. :captain:

Whilst we did get a few more good fish over the next couple of trips .... none topped that one.

:lolpoint:

Thanks fellas :drinking8:

No bulldust there except what was coming off the shady road quintreximon. Sure, it's a bit general but I'm not about to post up a coordinate for everyone to head out to.

On a different subject there, just because a reel only has 3 bearings not a dozen doesn't mean that it won't be able to handle a 25 year life of landing ripper barramundi if well maintained. I'm glad to post this ones pic and modified parts list up for all those fellas ABU 6500's in the sheds out there that need a bit of TLC. Looking after my gear was something instilled into me as a little tacker. All new bearings (All 3 of them) new carbon erskine drag, and the new design flat gripped handle off a new blue 5600 to match the 2 piece 8kg rod. It even still goes OK on light reef fishing too and has landed more than one m plus jewie :D the 65lb whiplash is definitely way better than the old 12lb or 20lb maxima monofilament it used to be spooled up with though. Check out the braid burn I got trolling on one of the trips.

Here's a few more pics including a screen shot pic off the LOWRANCE ELITE 9 Ti  and another metrey that I took my own self timed shots of  and then swum and released before I'd checked the 4 or 5 photos :banghead: Reminded me of the good old film camera days :banghead:

love the ugly stick golds :) i've got braid marks in foregrip from lifting snagged logs. should have seen the other blokes cowering in the boat :) :) Shame i got talked into becoming limp wristed with all these graphite rods. might have to give it a run next run off.
