Blinky hits it on the head

Thats the problem, no lic no, testing to get one thus no idea.

there is no hard and fast rules for fishing but there is for baoting.

like coming head on to each other on the river you pass to the starboard (green side to green side) everwhere else in Austrlalia but in the NT your not guaranted this will occur.

dont go full noise within 60m of a boat at achor. ETC ETC

AND NO WASH ZONES EXTEND 200M FROM BOAT RAMPS  EVERWHERE BUT NT.

having a lic is not a bad idea for NT. and in most states its a one off thing.

as for the pro's, they should now better, always ask to join a another boat at a spot ,most of the time we all say yes.

I agree with almost every thing you say. All vessels must navigate up and down the starboard side of rivers or channels and vessels coming head to head must always pass PORT to PORT. Thats world wide.

no idea

The Port to Port rule is not only ignored in Darwin. Its the same every where that I have been on the water, a lot of people either do not know it or choose to ignore it.

I'd disagree. Grew up on the Murray (NSW has had licenses for a fair while) and I must say most people were pretty aware of which side to pass on.

Have been getting confused around Darwin though, quite a few times I've moved to avoid a boat coming head on it's then turned towards me!!! :o :o

since this thread wont die can someone fix the typo in the title, it hurts my eyes

i always try port to port but more and more i am just making sure i give way, too many times i have nearly come to grief by the other guy trying to pass on my right side (i think it is a habit people get from the road rules), and since i am nearly always the smaller boat i think it is safer for me that way

When the tides are just about good for nothing or your are on-call for work i some times go down to the ramp with the paper and iced coffe to watch the fishos with NO IDEA geting thier boats in and out of the water, I think if you cant get your s@#t together or you cant reverse your boat in the water you shouldent have a boat... :fubird: :moon:

Come on Badcock people have to learn some time.

I admit it can be frustrating when some people are stuffing about at the top of the ramp (putting in bungs and removing tie downs should be done before your about to back down)

BUT

I think there needs to be some patience and understanding. People (yourself included I'm sure) make mistakes. Maybe they're just having a bad day. Maybe there new to boating and fishing. Either way getting p...ed off won't help much. Offering some help or advice rather than getting all fired up at these people that "shouldn't have a boat" might help though.

Well said Gill. I've been reading this post for awhile & I totaly agree everyone gotta start somewhere & we are all learning something different every day. I've done the same thing sat at the boat ramp shaking my head saying to myself " that bloke dos'nt deserve to own a boat, but at least he's having a go. We don't own the water ways so how about giving people advise instaed of giving them a serve.

If you cant back a trailer down a ramp..........Then practice at home in your drive way. Not at the ramp in peak hour. Get that bit smooth, then unhook the boat before you head down the ramp have it fall of the trailer as you back down. Got to laugh everytime you see that!

Should be signs to tell people with no idea that most ramps have more than one lane. Some even have three like East Arm.

People with little expireance need a hand for sure. I think a big problem in boating is the dealers who sell the boats. They should have a duty of care when they sell them to people new to the water.

Perhaps a minimum 1 day Boating 101 class with every purchase of a new boat. Would see alot of simple mistakes resolved.

But even the oldest seadog has had a bad day, forgot the bungs maybe or whinch handle!

Well said Gill, everyone of us has a bad day occassionally.

Hell I tried drowning my mate in the Adelaide river two weeks ago when I forgot to put the bungs in. :banghead: :banghead:

We all get frustrated with others from time to time however getting all worked up and resorting to ramp rage, river rage, jetty rage, squid rage and any other sort of rage is simply a waste of heart beats.

Sit back and think to yourself, when I am old and grey will I even remember the day someone p...ed me off at the ramp or on the water, hell no, I would suggest that you would be flat out remembering it a week from now without someone bring up the topic.

As the boys from "Tales of the Tinny" on the ABC radio said last Saturday, "chill man" chill.

if im waiting on the boat ramp and some one is backing or trying to back in a tinny, after they have had a few goes at it, i have been known to use my "cosiderable girth" (im not alowed to say fat) to straighten up their trailer for them by dragging it into line for them

thanks for fixing the heading

this has turned out to be a pretty good thread  a classic example of people not realy knowing the rules as paicy has correctly informed us it is port to port or red to red(oppisite to the road) because it is an international stardard. Ambigua got it wrong and he has probably upset a few people in the past who were saying that same thing he was "this d@#khead has know idea" but you thought you were doing the right thing.

licences would be good but with licences come other added nasties like .05 bal and boat rego etc etc. even with a boat licences and boating in QLD for 15 years people still dont know the rules anyway.

have a go at this website it is a written test for a NSW boat licence, you might be surprised how little you acually know about boating. took me 2 attempt before i passed :bonk:

http://www.maritime.nsw.gov.au/boattest.html

When on the water i always expect that other people dont know the rules and try to make my movements as obvious as possible and always try to be the first one to make the move to the starboard to help avoid any problems

but as always it just comes down to common sence!!!!

port to prot

Post by ambigua »

yes your right its port to port. my old man always use to say when i was we small that when a boat comes at you go to the side of the green light. thus green (starboard) to green (being the bank). soory about the confusion. just how i remeber it.
