Yep, failed too. Knew I should have gone for the wooly jumper over the bottle of Bundy to ward off hypothermia........
Interesting stuff but, still scares me how many boaters here don't even know about passing port/port. Some form of basic education should be compulsory, not sure how that can be achieved without licensing but.

I did the course in qld a few years ago, the guy doing it stated clearly at the start of the day not to worry, nobody fails and true to his word he coached a couple of dumbarses through the written quizz at the end until they had a pass mark
Maybe he only got paid per license issued

I reckon there would be questions that must be completed 100% and others that can be fudged a bit

Re: Four rescued off Darwin
Came back through Charles point about 6am this morning, still very dark. Came across 3 unlit boats, 1 stationary & 2 under way, all small boats under 6m.
I must admit after this story I had an uneasy sleep in the boat with a trawler working the area I was anchored up in overnight!

Re: Four rescued off Darwin
in this day and age most training facilitys pass every one weather competent or not. Its a load of poop. When i did my dogmans course there was a bloke that struggled to blow a whisle let a lone get the signal right. He still passed. Be farkin scary with him dogging a load hanging off a crane between buildings. Other courses i have done have been the same. I think the training facilitys are scared to take some ones money and fail them because they are incompetant.itsinmeblood wrote:I did the course in qld a few years ago, the guy doing it stated clearly at the start of the day not to worry, nobody fails and true to his word he coached a couple of dumbarses through the written quizz at the end until they had a pass mark

RTO's are funded on how many they can train, and pass, on each course. The ratio is very important, particularly when training on behalf of Gov due to having to train to the Gov's policy. Simple maths.

I wasn't aware a masthead light was required for vessels under 12m.nomad wrote:just out of interest, give the boat licence quiz a crack. you will be surprised

Re: Four rescued off Darwin
Good work Jeffish, I have a ton of questions for the poor guys in the other boat and I only hope some of them get answered, a 8m boat will have 2 if not 3 batteries so I don't see power being an issue so why they didn't radio we don't know, negligent work from the barge crew and I can't believe they where free to continue to W.A and not return to port upon realising by either the vessel itself, the Port Authority or the Water Police that they may have been involved.
All for Boat licences too, way too many idiots out here who have not a frigging clue what they are doing. Best thing they brought in for W.A. 1 day out of your life for Theory and practical exercises to pass. Seems that not many of you are aware you also need a licence to operate a VHF marine radio too. Boat rego doesn't do anything in this instance and only helps to identify craft though could be good for prosecution of vessels not doing the right thing.
