One of them said the whale impacted when it breached under them. that makes more sense to me than just running into it.

Ive only ever seen one up here off dundee. My mate poop himself when i decided to have a closer look.

Last year I saw a few large whales between the Vernons and Bathurst Island. There were maybe four in the pod and quite large (humpbacks?) and moving south through the channel.
I was fishing just off the break wall at Milley Point a few years ago when right up near the break wall a small (3m) whale breached the surface to slap the water. I assume to inhale a big bait ball or force them off the rocks.

Had them come up near the dinghy in Exmouth.
But best was off Kimberley on Mal Miles' Hyland C ... whales and sails!
