Re: light bars
I wouldn't want to be coming the other way, I don't think light bars on boats would be very safe or fair.

Re: light bars
Man, last time I was down the daily at Easter just about every boat had light bars and spit lights. Most were courteous and turned them off. Wa ps good for seeing people coming around bends etc.

Re: light bars
I have a small KORR dual row 12" light bar mounted on a ram mount on the bow. It's come in vary handy when fishing and traveling through heavily timbered impoundments. Just need to be cautious of other boats. I definitely wouldn’t take my off and recommend it over a spotlight/handheld spotlight.

Re: light bars
I dont use mine much in rivers mainly at sea.
I know that they are illegal but my view is that it might spark others to turn their nav lights on and not rely on the use of the light from a cigarette lighter as the only means of seeing a boat at sea

Re: light bars
those saying its illegal, i cant find any regs anywhere specifically stating the same. The only reference is that of saying what lights you CAN/must have, ie nav lights etc.
I spoke with one of the surveyors at NT transport and they agreed that there isnt anything banning them.
feel free to post a link to the link banning their use.

Re: light bars
PART C - LIGHTS AND SHAPES
Rule 20
Application
(a) Rules in this Part shall be complied with in all weathers.
(b) The Rules concerning lights shall be complied with from sunset to sunrise and during such times
no other lights shall be exhibited, except such lights as cannot be mistaken for the lights specified
in these Rules or do not impair their visibility or distinctive character, or interfere with the
keeping of a proper look-out.
(c) The lights prescribed by these Rules shall, if carried, also be exhibited from sunrise to sunset in
restricted visibility and may be exhibited in all other circumstances when it is deemed necessary.
(d) The Rules concerning shapes shall be complied with by day.
(e) The lights and shapes specified in these Rules shall comply with the provisions of Annex I to these
Regulations.
Here's a copy of the ColRegs.
They can be found here.http://www.collisionregs.com/MSN1781.pdf
ALL of the lights/shapes/sounds rules are about making sure that somebody else can see you.
There is nothing in the regs lights/shapes/sound rules about what you can do to see anybody else.
If you have an extra light on your boat for seeing other people (they'll see a lightbar pointed at them alright and be aware of your presence) then the only restrictions are those underlined above.
