Cable Steering Rod Seized

Post by balthasar832 »

Hi Everyone,

I've managed to snap my steering rod cable as the rod had seized. So I am now up for a new helm with cable kit but the problem I am having is that I am unable to remove the rod which has seized.

I have included pics to show where everything is at. Does anyone have any suggestions or know someone who I could pay to come over to remove it?

Ditch the cable steering and go for hydraulic. Will never look back

That's a good finish but this is where I'm now at.

I've pulled the engine off the boat, cut the cable and had to also remove the tilt rod as the steering bar is stupidly stuck to it. If I could at least salvage the tilt rod that'd be perfect.

Any ideas anyone?

And give it a good clean so you don't wedge any grit into it

I have a rod made up for this job mate, basicly soak it as much as you can in CRC, bash the end inside the steering tube using a bit of wood or whatever so you don't peen the end over or it will want to get stuck in tube. Then use the rod like a punch and flog it till it comes out. Heat is your friend too but gotta be careful to not damage anything else. Pm me if you need a hand

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the suggestions and like you said Scottie heat was my friend. I managed to get it out now and am cleaning it good and am now waiting for the new steering kit to arrive. What a long weekend it was.
Thanks everyone!

Feel ya pain, mine stuck in too, even after only a week or so. I'd used the wrong grease at some point and it went sticky and made it all worse. I put a new cable in, and still had it seize again. Pulled it all out again, and spent a lot of time cleaning out the tube.
After considerable time making sure everything was clean, and greased with good marine grease (even replaced the o-ring), it's been great for months now. Now the tub's getting a new outboard, at least the tube will be new too now.
Cheers
