Sooty and powertail heaven : Western Australian Stocked Dams

While i was out at work the other day i stumbled upon a bit of a dam which looked very fishy and got me wondering what may be in it. Luckily i had stashed my spin stick behind the seat of my car when we drove out this time so i made a plan to come back and chuck a line in. When i did so there was little grasshoppers everywhere and as i approached the dam they all flew off with a few landing in the water. They didnt last long and all of a sudden a heap of sootys and archerfish started boofing them of the surface! it looked cool and reminded me of barra going nuts and smashing everything. Anticipation was high as i rigged up a small squidgy and sure enough first cast i was hooked up to a power tail! i moved spots a bit and next cast the squidgy was smashed again and this time i landed a small sooty that put up a good little fight. I landed one more sooty then after that nearly every cast was rewarded with a powertail! Not quite runoff fishing :rofl:

but some good fun to see me thru the long 2 weeks at work! Ive got a feeling there may be some big sootys in this dam does anyone know some good lures to target them?

Any lure will do, they're not fussy. Try a small bibbed minow from 50 to 75mm. If you think there are big fish there go the larger size

yeah like dick said try bigger in this case look for the snags (if there is any) and flick towards it as the big sooty intend to hang around there i like to us a small weed less soft plastic to increase your chances of getting right in there

Red meat + circle hook = big sooty.
