Been catching a few of these around lately around rocky outcrops from nightcliff to lee point.
My first impression was that they were queenies but they appear slightly different
firstly, only caught them to 30cm. secondly, these fish have a more elongated body shape compared
to most queenies. but the main defining feature is their dorsal fin, each spine alternates in a different direction.
so would these fish be like a slightly different species? or are they just juveniles?
quite familiar with queenies and although they look similar somethings not right,
although i have never caught them this small before... any ideas?
Cheers Nick

Re: Fish ID Help?
Two main types of queenies here. We call them coastal or oceanic queenies. One you tend to catch in open water and the other along coastal reefs. I think jim has the scientific name above for the oceanic version.

Caught them off Lee Point as well. As said above a queenie, top notch for trolling in the deep blue dead or alive.

Caught many at the wharf on bait jigs, but only about the size of a sardine, thanks for the heads up on their potential as bait.
